You play 4th gen games on a CRT, right, anon?
You don't play them on a 1440p LCD display like a chump, do you?

Same, sorta. When emulating yes, I prefer crisp pixels. But the original hardware/CRT looked better and felt better. They looked great and the motion clarity is unmatched.
Emulators suck at emulating the look of it.

CRT shaders are uggo shit for fags, I just use a normal upscaling filters like I always have, even playing retroshit on a good PC CRT. As >>283835 notes though, this argument only applies to abusing crappy CRTs as a primitive AA filter, as opposed to...

>>270060
This. 99% of the shitposting in this thread comes from anons (including OP on an implicit level) thoughtlessly conflating NTSC, SDTV, composite color, interlaced scan, shadowmask, etc., into the term "CRT", even when like the more technically apt posters such as >>270114 >>270217
>>270341 >>270419 they are clearly knowledgable enough to understand the difference.

Almost all of the effects being described do not work at all on a p-scan aperture grille desktop PC HD CRT monitor, and likewise do work perfectly on the humblest NTSC LCDTV over composite. For the same reasons, on the aforementioned desktop CRT or modern LCD/plasma/OLED, shaders will perfectly reproduce all of these effects. Also, most games shown in this thread were multiplats that didn't need nor use these tricks on PC back in the day.

>>270435

Yes, slimness/deflection angle was limited only by the sophistication of drive electronics:

Speaking of difficult designs that might've been trivialized with digital electronics, I wonder why nobody took another swing at the Penetron? Resolution independence of a CRT projector, but in a single direct-view tube.

High quality post. I only have a few things to add:
>rewinding the absurdly complex flyback
Impossible because the whole mess is potted in epoxy to handle the ridiculous voltages inside, plus every chassis needs a custom flyback tuned specifically for it. There's one guy in the arcade scene who specifically spent his life savings bribing chinks to make them again, and only for a handful of simple arcade monitors, and they still have bad batches. What you're thinking of is rewinding the deflection yoke, which is possible but requires jedi training and a homemade jig. Also, the tube is a black box as far as repair goes - I know of one guy who can replace electron guns (the real wear part, not the phosphor) in Green Bay and only because he bought the service tooling from Wells Gardner at auction.

>Impossible because the whole mess is potted in epoxy to handle the ridiculous voltages inside
Yeah, I should've worded that differently, I meant even building a replacement. Apparently there are super versatile computer controlled robot winding machines now for as little as $10k that are used for all kinds of crazy shit comparable in precision to CRT windings.
>the tube is a black box as far as repair goes
I think this is just because people have grown soft these days. As recently as the 1980s there were independent shops in every town that could fill chips, evacuate tubes, swap guns, etc.
>>312291
CRTs were a cool experience but there was a lot of unpleasant stuff on older tubes.
Colors shifting, need to slap the TV or turn off and on to fix something, misaligning and overscan was common, you could see the curved lines, the tubes dimmed after some years... The more modern ones with flat tubes fixed most of this stuff but all of them still have some weird stuff happening from time to time.
If we still had someone mass producing and improving CRTs it would be cool but now even the folks who really knew how to fix them are dying out.

In the end, nitpicking too much you start to become like audiophiles.
A room or two full of stereos, decks, amps and pre amps were most of them need some kind of fix, and the ones that work you rarely touch it. And sometimes you question why you mostly use the a modern Bluetooth box that sounds almost as good as what you have.

>I think it's just because then you aren't paying equal homage to Metroid. Like I said, the idea is that both games came out at nearly the same time, and both were (are still?) incredibly popular, so it was never established in the lexicon which one deserved the "-like" epithet over the other. I think both series have even sold nearly the same number of copies at ~20 mil (don't quote me on that). I'm just shitballing, but I think it's just because neither one really established dominance over the other.
Same original anon that asked about Castlevania, Metroid, and compared Metroidvania with the use of Rogue(like). That's actually a good explanation, if true. And yes to other anons, my question(s) were perfectly innocent until the anon called me butthurt and retarded for simply asking about naming practices.
>>312301
>the idea is that both games came out at nearly the same time
Nah, like I said, the term was coined in response to Castlevania moving in a more Metroid-ish direction since SotN, along with the acquisition of lite RPG elements still distinguishing that from Metroid.

I didn't care much for portable video gaming as a kid, I had one of those bootleg Brick Game things, which I liked, and eventually got a GBA with a few cartridges for it, though I didn't enjoy the dark screen all that much, so I barely played it compared to my home consoles. I play mostly on handhelds nowadays though, the busy days with little time to play, mixed in with the comfort of being able to play while I lay down in bed, has really won me over recently. It's crazy how many are coming out nowadays, since Nintendo struck gold with the Switch.

How do you feel about playing on the go? What about playing in bed comfortably? Do you have a bunch of handhelds or just a few? What are your favorites from the ones you do own and how would you rate them in general? It'd be cool to have a thread where we can share this.

>Retroid 7
As it stands, who fucking knows. They seem to be keeping up with their usual pattern of releases, with a gimmick handheld (RP Nova aka a 4:3 RP6) in the middle of their yearly-ish flagship releases (albeit on a delay), and their usual pattern of their chipset being a year behind the industry's cutting edge means they've got a clear path laid out for them (RP7 would probably be a Snapdragon 8 Elite machine).
At the same time, chinkheld releases in general that are usually characterized by high-volume experimental products have ground to a fucking halt over the last year with the RAM / Memory wipeouts, so the question is if it's also going to hit Retroid and the other major chinkheld companies or not come later on in the year.

I recently heard that RAM companies are about to get sued over price fixing /cartel behavior, I hope that leads to something interesting.
How do I disable gyro on a retroid?
It's much more of a hinderance than anything because it makes the screen rotate the wrong way all the time.

It will exist. When? We don't know. tbh 8gen2 pretty much covers main retro stuffs ps2 included and even switch. Not that more powerful SOC wouldn't be welcomed but i think it will get a lot more expensive, so i'm not really craving for it.

The franchise about exotic fantasy animal control; where you can take an oversized weapon (and a large attack-ladybug if you're French) with your untrustworthy bipedal cat-slave to get mauled by a biologically reasonable fire-breathing tyrannnosaur to the tune of an obscure early 1900's symphonic reference, cuz the cute girl at the reception desk asked nicely and daddy could do with a new fur hat helmet with tacked-on scales (they make it more water resistant).

Sam & Max has big Gravity Falls energy
>babbys first murrica the flightsim
I would personally point to picrel as the perfect example. Cheezy celeb endorsement aside, it's a guided tour through excepting WWI burgerstan's formative airwars: WWII Europe, Korea, and Vietnam. Missions usually focus on either straight dogfights, or escorting heavy bombers (or attacking them, if you play as OPFOR). The flight model also holds a special spot in my heart, being just hardcore enough to feel like a flightsim, but arcade-y enough that filthy casuals and small children can play it. Note the Mac version is much nicer, featuring high-rez modes, multi-monitor, and LAN netplay. Incidentally, this is also an EA game, by yet another one (Looking Glass) in their stable of beloved cult hit studios that was ultimately raped to death.

What are you guys playing in this last month of the year? Any game you want to share or warn about? Do you have a "Christmas game" you frequently played in this jolly days? I don´t personally.

Just finished Metroid for the first time. Never played any game of the series or much Metroidvanias at all. But I must say I really like it.

Not knowing where to go and being underpowered frustrated me at the beginning. But I soldiered on and started to find the game quite fun after finding upgrades and new paths.

Some complain I have about the game is that when you are crossing doors sometimes enemies can hit you without the player being able to do anything. That and that the bosses are underwhelming, with not even Mother Brain being much of a challenge (the tubes not appearing again when you destroy them even if you die helped a lot in that though). Overall, the second half of the game is not as hard as the first.

The experience was an adquired taste for me but I ended up enjoying it. Will play the sequel later but for now I´m thinking about what to play next.

I don't find this to be true at all. Most games do not in fact copy the actual RPG elements of Metroidvanias when they go with Metroid's action-ability-gated exploration structure. Hence is much more appropriate to refer to the genre as Metroid-likes.

LOL what a giant dweeb nobody cares

Also, on the subject of Minecraft, and private servers, and think of the children, M$ has done something far more insidious than attacking private servers.

Unlike most buy-to-own games even today, Minecraft is unusual in that it is linked to an account. If this account is revoked, not only will your server be removed from M$'s 1st-party hosting service ("Realms"), or M$'s 1st-party metaserver (Official Server List), or even the ability to host servers of any kind down to LAN. Your entire copy of Minecraft linked to that account will simply stop working, not just all of your hosted server down to LAN, but even joining a server, or playing single-player offline. And this policy was rolled out alongside overreaching EULA changes extending bannable offenses from mere piracy and hacking, to cover crazy stuff like firearm mods and (autoenforced by bots) naughty words in chat or signs, even on non-public or LAN servers.

The next game will be on the 5th. At 20:00 GMT.

There is aa thread on the other website too. Cross posting here since a lot of the old players may not be following both websites.

Feel free to discuss the failure that was the vfun revival, dump old clips and screenshots. Or host yourselves.
