ATTENTIONN!!!1!ONEeleven!

We’re lowering the post limit for threads on /v/ to 350 posts, with the bump limit lowered to 315.

Activity has dropped since the current limits were originally set, leaving too many threads to stagnate in the catalog. Lowering said limits should encourage faster turnover and make room for new threads, helping keep the board more active.

Threads that have already reached 350 posts will be locked. If you want to continue a thread, simply start a new one.
Cyclical threads will have the posts exceeding the new limit automatically deleted.
The change will take effect in 48 hours. Please archive any threads you care about and save any files you want to keep, as they may be pruned sooner after the new limits are in place.

Following is a comprehensive list of all threads that will be affected:

>>788 lock >>25002 lock >>211768 lock

Why? How is making the board's collective memory shorter going to solve the real problem causing that reduced activity, schizos and bad actors running wild with no mod coverage to keep them from shitting up the front page and pushing yet more anons into giving up on imageboards?

I agree with this anon. The entire point of alt-boards beign better than judeo-jeet-occupied 4fags and similar spaces is the much-expanded limit before auto-saging which makes archiving / breathing room for authentic posters vs bad actors / memory of topics far easier. This is a very bad idea, and there's really no good justification for it.

>we 'NEED' a catalog filled with the same rolling threads that hit bump limit instead of containing them
Nigger you should be upping the post limit to 1,000 with a bump limit at 950. If you go through with this, you're going to have a 'log with 4 GTA6 threads and 3 QTDDTOT's by the end of the year, with 7 uninteresting, one-note 3-reply dead threads inbetween.

>Lowering said limits should encourage faster turnover and make room for new threads, helping keep the board more active.
No, it's going to wipe out long-term and high-effort discussions and kill off activity for people who clock in every now and again.

How about you just do your fucking janny-job and clean bumplocked threads off of the log after manually archiving them yourself. You managed to summon the energy to link all the threads you want to lock yourself... go one step further and fill in a captcha for archive.is + Wayback, then put them on an accessible public textpage. Then delete them off of the log, so the long-term slower threads don't get kicked off by a newfag making a thread that doesn't need to be made.

Who asked for this. Who wants this.

Same here, reducing the bumplimit is a measure I'd normally expect to see on boards with a higher PPH and/or a larger thread cache.
Does Sleepy have Myrient-tier storage issues?

The timing is also highly questionable what with all the low effort cuckchanneling as of late, yet even with that old threads aren't being spammed or necrobumped god I fucking hate using that word in IB contexts.

Does this have anything to do with the planned LLM automod?
Lowering the per-thread post limit would make sense for reducing load on the KV cache.

And moderation wise, what harm is there in old threads?
It'd be one thing if they were spammed all over the board by innovative tacticians, but z*mer newfags tend to make effortless one liners rather than dig up threads beyond their limited perception of time.
We also don't exactly have daily Gamergoober-tier watercooler threads meta threads are irrelevant and inactive outside of drama or board announcements so they don't count here so that justification from back when M*rk reduced the bump limit on blacked.gov doesn't fly either.
Moreso as Anons have already mentioned the fact you can read through threads that got incremental updates over the course of years, nay, half a decade in some cases is a standout feature that separates Sleepy and other webring sites from the Goldfish-oriented algorithmically senile mainstream Internet.

If there is some greater purpose to these measures I'd like to know, because old threads like the Audio thread don't harm anyone and threads with lots of activity (News, Hardware) hit the bump limit anyway long before they clog up the board.
There's also not a single thread here with the kind of weight and in-board cultural disparity Smug's old 2000-PPT café threads had, but those were shuffled off to their own board due to technical and moderation issues.

Looks like to me that mods finally trying to keep at least some of the increased board activity, that was caused by an external world event.

Nah, executed after the 6 year old game soundtrack thread reached the endsleep well, gentle loliClearly that was holding this change back since there is 6 years of tunes there. 48hr. really ain't enough time for that + whatever else you wanna dumpster dive for, find, then save.
About the change, I too feel it's pointless.
>>316466
>Same here, reducing the bumplimit is a measure I'd normally expect to see on boards with a higher PPH and/or a larger thread cache.
That's exactly the point and you don't even realize it. The lower bump isn't a response to high PPH, but it stimulates more posts per hour by encouraging more threads.

Save for popular generals, new threads have a higher PPH than old threads. You can verify yourself by looking at the post dates in various threads in the catalogue and you'll tend to see larger intervals the further you go down. It may seem insignificant, but it compounds. New threads also have a higher ratio of unique posters to posts (though this is difficult to verify here since IDs change frequently) so even if the PPH is the same, more people are posting.

It should go even further, honestly. The page limit needs to be reduced too, or at least have everything after a certain page limit get autolocked.

>>316476
>This might as well be mark's /v/ at this rate.
Just to let you know, Mark's /v/ had extremely high bump limits and a massive catalog, so this is very much a move in the opposite direction.

One of the biggest issues I've had for years is how so many people believe in the theory that OP quality dictates or even equates to thread quality. I have no metrics to measure this, but in my personal experience, the only case where there is a strong correlation is when the OP is clearly spam.
Lower it to 1, faggot.

The only thing you are going to get is multiple similar threads filling the catalog and for bad actors to sink the threads they don't like faster.

Go into any non-general thread, press Ctrl+F, and search "MM/YYYY", replacing the letters with the the month and year of the OP. As you increase the date, you will see in nearly every case that there will be more posts made in that first month than every subsequent one even when factoring in events like holidays and 4chan outage. The few exceptions are because the OP was created only a couple of days to the end of the month and even in situations where only a few days remain the number of posts is often close if not exceeding the entire next month.

I think you will find it indisputable that new threads are the single most important factor to creating activity, and I am certain that even the act of creating a duplicate thread and locking the old one will produce more posts on that topic than the old thread ever could in the same time frame.

Also, I want to observe that the desire for preservation is a sentiment that people have held onto for years largely because of Gamergate's "archive everything" philosophy and exacerbated by the death of 8chan and subsequent Balkanization of the community. Imageboards and their threads are temporal, so I consider it antithetical by nature to have threads practically unused for months at a time. I suppose people still "use" them by lurking, but dedicating so many pages of the catalogue just so people can lurk is a stupid usage of resources in my opinion.

This is an absolute nonsequitor, and it literally only considers postrate and not post quality or content. Chatrooms get more entries than imageboards - doesn't mean they're imageboards, doesn't mean they're good.

>>316517
You're using words you don't know the meaning of, in improper ways.
<I want to observe that the desire for preservation is a sentiment that people have held onto for years largely because of Gamergate's "archive everything" philosophy and exacerbated by the death of 8chan and subsequent Balkanization of the community
tl;dr I want to "say that" [rest of the post], brevity is the soul of wit etc etc. Also, this isn't /gghq/'s bunker, newfag. Also (x2), 8chan getting nuked by cloudflare was a lesson in centralization and letting containment boards fester (and fuck up the rest of the site), not in a lack of archiving. Preservation had nothing to do with it, all the old archives are still in place - unless you'd like to explain otherwise.
<exacerbated by the death of 8chan
So it was provoked and worsened? Exacerbate isn't a synonym for justify or compound.
<subsequent Balkanization
The Balkans are a noun, balkanization is a verb and isn't naturally capitalized (unless you're directly comparing this scenario to the breakup of Yuogslavia, or any other place naturally referred to as Balkans).
<Imageboards and their threads are temporal
Complete non-statement. "Humans and their breathing are dilute".
<antithetical by nature
A board being a place a message is left for extended periods so it can be read in somebody's own time is the exact diametrical opposite of it's intended use? Have you ever been outside to see what a real community bulletin board is?
<suppose
You theorize that people use them to lurk? It's a working hypothesis on the existence of lurkers?
<catalogue
It's spelt at the bottom of the page for you. Context trumps dialect for referential noun usage; it's improper to not use Catalog, even if you prefer dialects that retain the inert letters.

Either this is AI, it's ESL or it's tryhard - but what it's not is authoritative (which is what it's trying to be). Janny and moderator should stick to sweeping it up and moderating, not weak-wristed attempts at social engineering (check the job description) (and the pay grade) (and the power entitlement).
>dedicating so many pages of the catalogue just so people can lurk is a stupid usage of resources in my opinion
Then (as other Anons have pointed out) janny can get off their fucking ass and archive + sweep up bumplocked threads themselves once they're past Pg5 or whatever. Rather than degrading ongoing and active threads.
Stop being busy the irony of attaching a Moomins image while going out of your way to justify work that nobody wants to be done isn't lost on me.

Also, you answered neither of Anons points.

Threads are on imageboards are meant to be ethereal so this doesn't bother me in the least.

This change feels like when a dev game wakes up after not doing anything for years, then makes some "balancing" changes to a single player game.

I highly disagree with this assertion.
New threads in my niggered opinion aren't necessary when old threads can serve their purpose just fine, moreso just because a thread is old doesn't mean it is doomed to eternal inactivity as evidenced by the Soundtrack thread, the game review threads, the Emulation thread and a few others.
Of course they might be "necessary" to pull in the kind of brain damaged users who can't fathom threads existing beyond page 1 or 2 and never dare look through the catalog because that would take effort, let alone leasurely reading through old material to catch up.

>>316517
Counterpoint: Smug's /tg/.
Sleepy/v/ is highly unlikely to have the same kind of PPH as old 8/v/ had during its final months around 100-600 PPH I think? and as such shouldn't pretend it is unless 4chan dies for real and its users end up squatting here instead of blacked.gov for some reason implying they wouldn't just go back to Xiktok or Dicksword.
And while it's true that IBs are temporal, there is no god damned reason to force the board to be more fleeting than it is absent of severe technical issues, mass influx of new users or otherwise.
Slow IBs can exist just fine and fucking around with the per-thread post limit during a period of relatively slow posting doesn't accomplish much of anything aside from pissing off the majority of users.
You can lower the bump limit if you want but the per-thread post limit should either remain as is or be lowered at a later date, 2 days isn't enough time for most Anons to archive high quality postings from years-old threads.

Basically when he first became a mod he would build a profile of every single person he decided to ban regardless if the initial justification for the ban was warranted just so he could arbitrarily enforce the exact length of the ban for the bans sake while also increasing the length of the ban every time he "caught" someone for ban evasion. Mind you he wasn't exclusively going after schizos or identityfags or bad actors for ban evading, he really was just strangely pedantic about honoring bans.

I saw this thread when it was just made and had no replies, but I didn't have time to make a post at the time, good to see I was right and the last few remaining posters are indeed not taking this lightly.

I would make a suggestion on a different method or just to leave things as they are, but it's clear the mod is a faggot and won't listen to anyone, so I won't bother. The silver lining here is that since the cakekike is finally gone, 8moe /v/ might finally be usable for once, not that there is any guarantees but at least I know one power tripping mod is gone there and I know for a fact there is one here.

It may be an assertion in short of an academic paper, but the evidence is right there. Old threads cannot serve a purpose nearly as effectively as new threads and giving so much preference to them is at the expense of community, which is the most important thing.

The old threads get activity because creating duplicates is banned, so they continue to grow for months if not years before expiring. A new thread can be just as much of a continuation as the old one through crosslinking, and you get the additional benefit of attracting more posters to participate.
>And while it's true that IBs are temporal, there is no god damned reason to force the board to be more fleeting than it is
If it results in thread creation, then it is a very good reason to be a little more temporal.
>That's exactly the kind of thing that differentiates the webring from 4chan with its 6 gorillion PPM and threads that disappear within minutes as opposed to months or years!
I don’t think being on either end of those extremes is the board’s Platonic ideal.

You know what? I think I get it now. When you want to post about something and there's already a thread with 400 replies that might be related you either have to read all 400 posts to see if someone made the same post or risk getting screeched at by some shitter about duplicate posts. So instead you just don't post. Increasing thread turnover a little bit could mitigate that.

That doesn't change the fact that virtual is a KC tier sperglord who created yet another chance for /cattle/ and friends to bleed the site of users with doomposting in a meta thread instead of just explaining things or heaven forbid asking for input.

I don't care if a raise in PPH or better yet, post quality oy gevalt comes from new threads or existing threads, but going all
>old threads bad, new threads good

Alternatively, why not simply lower the thread cache?
13 pages of old threads is a bit much for a board as slow as this, would reducing it 10 or 9 pages be a disaster?

Unless every single one of those replies consist of fuckhueg /tg/-tier effortposting this can be done in an hour, and if you want to be a massive faggot you can ask an LLM to summarize it 4U.
Skimming threads is also nothing new and to my knowledge neither banned nor actively harmful depends on the poster I guess, it may result in occasional content duplicates but sleepy can detect those in terms of files and getting called out for accidentally posting the same thing twice is nothing special for any sane Anon, it doesn't even happen that often.
Actually, having older threads up for longer might as well be a decent counter to the endless waves of cuntpasted reposts that plague high-PPH boards.

Honestly the hybrid(?) approach of long-pseudo-general threads (Hardware, News, Reviews etc.) mixed with shorter threads for a specific topic (that may over time grow in size and/or branch out if interest is maintained) and dedicated recurring single-purpose threads (Webm, Soundtracks) is in my opinion preferable to a new GaymerGoobings#671488 every day or /fag/ General#10^27 every 5 hours (the latter being 99% botspam).

I'm in a bit of a hurry so I'll try to be curt but thorough.

Ok so, I typically would not post with my capcode or name attached, in fact, I reckon this might be the first, maybe second time at best, but I suppose the situation is starting to degenerate to the point it's warranted.

First, let's clear some air: these >>316526 >>316539 posts aren't mine, my capcode shows up as Global Staff, not Board. I literally posted the thread, went to do some other stuff and then went to bed. I only woke up just now to go to work. Also, I've only gotten back from a year long hiatus due to private matters some 2 weeks ago. So, I don't know what kind of ghost people who claim to have been bickering with me have been visited by. Sturgeon gave me a quick brief on how there are some new people in the staff but from my understanding there's currently only one active local mod on /v/, so I can only assume both capcoded posts were made by him, and the ban also issued by him, to himself? Unless there's some context I'm missing, I don't know, don't ask me. Also I didn't make that poll.

Second, regarding the main topic. I reckon there has been a huge conflict of information on both ends, admittedly miscommunication on my part, and possibly misunderstanding on yours, which has led to this blowing way, way out of proportion. Yes, looking back at the OP I'll concede it could've been clearer and some things that seemed obvious to me wouldn't be to everyone. That's on me. At the same time, most criticism seems to stem either from misunderstandings or from assuming the worst possible doomsday scenarios:

>ZOMG THEY'RE NUKING A ZILLION THREADS FOR THE LULZ
No. Nowhere in the OP does it say that, like at all. I can sorta, kinda see how one could maybe misinterpret but I'm telling you now that's not what's happening. What is really happening is that by adjusting the thread post limit, threads which are past that new limit will get locked automatically. Locked mind you, not exterminatus'd from orbit overnight, and not sucked into a black hole, not a blink and you'll miss it thing. I said they would get pruned "sooner" because that's what happens with threads that, over time, slide to the bottom of the catalog and you know, eventually get pruned, normally? Just that it would happen a bit sooner because all newer threads will have a slightly shorter lifespan. Which brings me to the second point.

>ZOMG THIS IS LITERALLY TURNING TO TWITTER ZOOMER ZOOMER 4CUCK & friends
Which sounds very dramatic and all, but that's kind of all it is, and it almost seems silly having to address it. The change is nowhere near as huge as some make it seem. 100 fewer posts per thread is only 22% less than the current limit. If a thread took months to fill up before, it'll still take months with the new limits, it'll just take a little less, and then you can just make a new one. That's literally it.
It's a small adjustment that reflects the current volume of activity. The previous limits made sense when this place had a higher user and post count, and threads filled up at an acceptable and appropriate pace. But now that there are fewer people it's effectively fighting against activity. As someone already pointed out, threads tend to generate more traction earlier in their life. All this does is push a little in that direction, so I quite honestly don't get all the talk about it being the Antichrist 9000.

>We have to preserve threads FOREVAH
No? This is an imageboard, ephemeral in nature. Threads come and go by design. In some places quicker, some other slower, but it's not some kind of permanent static archival site. If that's what you're looking for I'm afraid you want a fundamentally different experience and you should maybe look into forums with permanent storage or getting into local archiving efforts. I'm sorry but this isn't really up for debate. A thread lasting for 2 years because someone bumps it every few months doesn't necessarily mean quality.

>Won't anyone think of the poor threads we're losing?
If anyone had taken 2 minutes to check the list I posted they'd see the vast majority of those threads are already autosaging, are 2+ years old, and/or have already been replaced by a new iteration. Also, I already explained that feared nuking isn't happening, so they'll stick around until they reach the bottom of the catalog and die of natural causes.

Sturgeon is currently not around to vouch, but know that prior to posting the thread I'd pitched it to him and discussed it at length and had him green light it on two separate occasions. I don't particularly get where the notion
>HE'S DESTROYING THE SITE AND IGNORING US BECAUSE HE'S EVIL
comes from exactly.
I mean yeah, I fucking went to sleep and woke up to a tornado of autism and blatant fuckery. I read the thread, I understand people are resistant to change "for the sake of change" or that some might feel like we're "taking" something from them. That's fine. You can think 350 is a stupid limit. You can think the whole idea is unnecessary. You can disagree with the reasoning. None of that is a problem.
What is a problem is inventing things that aren't happening, attributing posts to people who didn't make them, or otherwise turning a relatively minor discussion into a fucking retarded proxy war. That's not criticism and it doesn't help anyone figure out whether the change is actually a good idea, but I understand the latter is obviously not on everyone's agenda.

I made the suggestion to Sturgeon in good faith because I genuinely believe it'll improve board health in the long run. That doesn't mean it's sacred scripture, and it doesn't mean criticism isn't allowed. It means there was an actual reason for proposing it beyond "staff woke up nasty+gay and decided to fuck with the board."
I already pinged Sturgeon to discuss the topic further and whether to actually implement the change or not. Given the amount of confusion around the implementation, and since some were asking for a longer window to archive stuff, we'll postpone it until next weekend for now. To be clear, postponed does not mean cancelled. It means we're taking another look at it before doing anything, and there is now more time for people to actually read what the change does rather than whatever interpretation has been circulating in this thread. I'm not just going to capitulate because some sperged out loudly.
If you have an actual argument against the change, make it. If you think 350 is too low, explain why. If there's something about the implementation I haven't considered, point it out. That's useful. Conspiracy circus bullshit and endless gay slapfighting isn't.

With that said, the substantive discussion has run its course for now, and with the arrival of the usual suspects this thread is rapidly turning into a shitshow, so I'm gonna lock it temporarily and keep it locked until Sturgeon's back and has had a chance to look through the discussion himself. We can pick this back up then, with an actual decision on whether the change is happening, being modified, or being scrapped.

Having now written this piece of shit monologue I have to go be a good wageslave.
