A thread for movies featuring tomboys. What counts as a tomboy movie is kind of vague, as they don't necessarily have to be about 'being a tomboy' or 'the phenomenon of tomboys', but ideally a tomboy should be prominently featured in the film instead of being a background character and ideally the movie would be good.
In theory this isn't be limited to anime, but I suspect they'll be the only films worthwhile since a lot of western movies about 'tomboys' are either butch dyke ntr films or tranny garbage.

Unrelated, but I was reading about Atalanta from Greek mythology and she'd be perfect material for a tomboy movie. Here's a brief summary leaving out some details:

>She's left to die in on a mountain by her father for not being the son he wanted
>A she-bear picks her up and raises her until some hunters continue the raising
>Atalanta turns into an amazing huntress, killing centaurs and completely incapacitating a boar that was wreaking havoc on a village
>She's also pretty hot, yo, but she hates the boys
>She makes peace with her parents and lives with them
>All the boys in the yard continue to like her milkshakes so she tells them she'll marry whoever beats her in a race
>Of course, all lose because she's so good
>One cunning guy gets Aphrodite's help (she likes taming young mistresses) by getting some golden apples that no one can resist
>He uses them in the race and wins
>Marries her, impregnates her, and has a son who may potentially have a God as a father instead, but it's inconclusive - this happens a lot in Greek mythology

I fail to see how the other examples are used incorrectly.

Brave would be a pretty straightforward example. Apparently its bad though but so are most of the films in this thread

We have movie nights, we have bad movie nights, but we don't have TV nights. Therefore I'm going to do a little pilot hue program here to see if there's enough interest.
WHAT: Watch TV shows with fellow anons
WHERE: https://cytu.be/r/ZZZTV
WHEN: Wednesday nights at 7:00 EST. Check last pic if you're confused.
WHY: It helps to pad out the long week between the biweekly gamenights and weekend movie nights.
For week 1, we'll have the following:
Dilbert
>Cubicle denizen Dilbert toils away at Path-E-Tech which makes undefined products. The focus is on his survival amongst a moronic boss, hostile co-workers and his malevolent pet, Dogbert.
Miami Vice
>Esplendent with authentic 1980s music, fashion, and vibe, "Miami Vice" follows two undercover detectives and their extended team through the mean streets of Miami, Florida.
Alone
>Ten survival "experts" attempt to survive alone. The winner receives $500,000.
Hope to see you there!

>A $27 million budget for Lake Placid in 1999 was large for a creature feature, enabling a strong cast, quality effects, and theatrical release, but modest compared to major Hollywood films of the era. Adjusted for inflation, it's equivalent to ~$50 million today, placing it in the mid-budget range for genre films.
ok, so even if these actor/actresses agreed to do this project with this amount of budget, how the hell did fox greenlit this in the first place, or how the hell did they managed to?

I mean compared it to the likes of Anaconda (1997): ~$45 million, Deep Blue Sea (1999): ~$60 million, Godzilla (1998): ~$130 million, Python (2000) or Crocodile (2000): ~$3-10 million
even disregarding the budget for just a second, each of them had a premise that offered a little more "sci-fiey"-exotic, Anaconda, set in the amazon with Jon Voight as a ruthless hunter for a protagonist, Deep Blue Sea, brain experiments with great whites, Godzilla, Godzilla, and with Python and Crocodile being direct-to-video,had low budgets, relying on minimal effects and lesser-known actors, so I wouldn't count them here

>Demons (1971)
I figured I had to watch at least one horror movie on my own this month. I came across Demons, a Japanese movie from the early 70s that I had actually seen the beginning of (but then subsequently forgot). The movie fell under "horror", so I figured I'd give it a shot.
Movie's about a ronin who is supposed to be leading a vendetta movement, but he instead gets sucked into the ploy of a geisha.
The cinematography is amazing. Super cool shots and angles are used throughout the movie. I was never bored watching the screen, even though the movie was a little over 2 hours long.
The plot was kind of meh (in that you know what's going to happen), though still captivating in its own way the director loves tricking you, which keeps you on the edge of your seat.
The gore was, well, unexpected. I'm guessing you could call this a historical slasher movie in a way? I thought we were going to get spoops as I expect from some 60s yokai movie, but that wasn't the case here at all. There are some ghost elements, but I think the big "horror" element is the gore. And it doesn't disappoint, even though it's in black and white.
Although the plot is somewhat weak (maybe that's why it's considered a horror movie, heh) and it is fairly long, I'd still recommend you give this one a watch this Halloween season. Don't try looking it up too much, it's one of those movies where it's better if you know less about it. The mo

Chances are, you've probably heard of the movie "12 Angry Men" with Henry Fonda. Maybe you don't know anything beyond the title, but it's a classic that's often on "best of" lists in some capacity.

Ever heard of the Japanese re-telling "The Gentle Twelve (12人の優しい日本人)"? Frankly, neither had I. I saw it advertised as a parody, though I don't think parody is the right word. Let's provide some context:

12 Angry Men is about a jury that unanimously agrees that a boy who killed his father is guilty... Only to slowly have the realisation that perhaps biases stand in the way of their conviction. Henry Fonda is the reason you watch the film. I haven't seen it in a long while, but I remember his presence the strongest.

The Gentle Twelve flips that and, instead, has everyone convinced a woman who killed her ex is not guilty. You can see where this is going - one man, instead, tries to convince everyone of why she is guilty. You can see why "parody" got thrown around, but it isn't comedic in the least. But "re-telling" would be a stronger description.

Movie is close to two hours, but it's interesting enough that you don't feel the length. I will say, though, that the movie kind of shits the bed in the last twenty minutes or so. It had moments of hive-mind that I couldn't believe anyone would agree to yes, let's say guilty with self-defence just to get out of here, but they were fleeting. Then the movie really hits a point where I was thinking that

General scifi thread, I'm going to assume we're allowed to talk about shows here as well.
I finished watched Farscape and thought it was good, I liked most of the characters but it all felt a bit jumbled, like trying to do too much in too little time. I also didn't think it was made clear which side Scorpius was on. I think there was a moment somewhere towards the end where he decided what he was fighting for but the whole time I was just waiting for him to backstab everyone else again like he did the dozen times beforehand. I think overall it had too many characters that it was trying to juggle around and they didn't really have time to flesh out any of the secondary characters as much as the primary cast.
Because of all that I think I like Lexx more, even for all the flaws it has in the later seasons. It kept it weird but simple, only a few real characters you have to keep track of and the much slower pace. The universe was also more interesting but they never really explain much of anything in it. I want to know more about His Shadow and the League of 20,000 Planets and how it was created, but after the first season it's pretty much mothballed and rarely mentioned again or explored in any kind of detail. Season 3 tried too hard to be 2deep4u and season 4 was a shitshow on all fronts, at least the finale was good though.
I have an endless craving for late-90s/early-2000s scifi but it seems I'm running out. What ot

scifi update from yours truly
>seaquest DsV
finished season 1, the problem is it's too family friendly, too afraid to do anything new, and the weird obsession with dolphins being magical ethereal beings still coming into play, like the episode where he helps the russian mobster bond with his autistic son, or in season 2 when darwin can communicate with aliens. fucking bizarre show but not in a fun way, just a really weird and bad acting-way. and lots of future predictions that aged miserably.
also learned the actor who played Lucas an-hero'd at 27, that was sad.
>andromeda
haven't touched it since my last post and i don't know if i will again, just a trainwreck of a show by the end.
>sliders
the second half of season 3 is really fucking bad after they kill off arturo, but in season 4 they slightly improve it by bringing the kromags back as the main enemy but they're really bad at making them good enemies. just watched the one where they convince one of them to join their side and kill himself in the process. none of the alternate earths they're visiting are that interesting either, and the script + acting is really bad.
is scifi just a doomed genre?

I'm almost through the first season of TNG, and the people saying it gets better after season 1 better be right because wow this is a slog. I liked Natasha until she fucks Data in the second episode and then gets one-shot by the black swamp monster towards the end of the season and gives a preachy pre-recorded monologue in front of the Windows XP Bliss wallpaper, then apparently never shows up again. It's boring and slow and doesn't have any unique ideas. My expectations for neoliberal propaganda were low but come on now.

Tough choice but I will pick The Desert of the Tartars (1976), if you can read the book first you might appreciate it more but otherwise it's one of those movies you might want to watch in your early 20s (or even before that) and re-watch in a decade or two, it's a meditation on life and different people will have a different interpretation of the ending and the message in general.
Also the scenery is stunning, it was filmed in Iran in a location that has been wiped by an earthquake in 2008.

Will probably drop eventually, but nothing in the first half of season 1 has bothered me enough (obviously wish the niggers died early/weren't in it). I like the bald, old paraplegic turning into a schizophrenic commando. The Iraqi guy seems a little too brown.

season 2 is really good and probably the high point of the series, i think season 3 is good too but it's been over a decade since i've watched it so i don't remember. season 4 is when it introduces time travel and alternate timelines and i completely lost track of what was happening after that. it's up to you if you want to finish it all the way through to the end but imo it becomes a huge slog after 3.

I actually just finished it right now and... what? I feel like I missed something. I guess something happened to Jack? Either way, I didn't hate it like I expected to. It's nothing special, but relatively impressive for having been a normalfag production for a network such as ABC.

it's been a long time since i've seen it and i was mostly tuned out by season 4 but yeah it does just kinda end with no warning, just an awkward fight between old men in the form of not-locke and whoever the big bad was. i think the ultimate official explanation was that they all died in the crash and it was just puragtory, so nothing matters lol but i'm not sure if that was ever made official
