I was thinking about making this thread some time ago. Freeware games are in a category of their own.

OpenRA has a official website with a obvious as shit domain: openra.net

Spiderweb Software lists their oldest games direcetly on their website: spiderwebsoftware.com/productsOld.html

You forgot DOVE and DoveZ, the first was always freeware but the second a boxed release until one of its authors uploaded it to his homepage a decade later.
Why did late 1990s obscure germanic games only available on the world wide web have such ebin tracker music, ahh I want to go back.

It was a commercial doujin game from my memory.
Embric of Wulfhammer
https://largebattleshipstudios.itch.io/embric/purchase
RPG maker game that is just straight up yuri smut. Lots of shit you have to do to get the best, hidden ending. Seriously, iirc, the true hidden ending is hidden behind three layers of @#$!ing hidden endings.

Dwarf Fortress
https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
Autism micromanagement game.

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
https://cataclysmdda.org/
Autism solomanagement game.

Morning Star Academy
Uh...holy shit. I can't find a link to this anymore, but I still have it. ... Uh, I didn't think I would stumble into accidentally being a videogame preservationist. Also, what the hell should I do with it?
Anyways, it's another yuri game. The mechanics are kind of annoyingly random to get certain endings, and the endings of the game are not well catalogued at all. It's not well played, and I don't really know anyone else who's played it. Nowadays you also have to do a shitton of "Run in compatibility mode" stuff to get it to run.

Nethack
https://www.nethack.org/
One of the oldest games.

Dig'n'Rig
https://games.digipen.edu/games/dig-n-rig
Upgrade to get to the deeper areas autism game.

.flow

A Yume Nikki knock-off. I really liked it because I was in this headspace where I viewed what most people saw as 'horror'/'unnerving' as misunderstood.

Solarus

Did you like Zelda:LTTP? Well, have like 30 games like that.

Holocure

vtuber brainrot game.

Luanti

>Also, what the hell should I do with it?
Make a static site for it with the game and all the info you have and then torrent it, like the guy who made a site for Cookie's Bustle out of sheer spite for the speculator who tried to wipe it from the internet so his copies would be worth more.

In case you didn't know, Is There Any Deal, a price tracking aggregator for video games has RSS feeds for game giveaways.
https://isthereanydeal.com/feeds/

I use
https://isthereanydeal.com/feeds/US/giveaways.rss

It's usually either GoG or >Epic giving away free games.

This has also made me realize just how much Steam is super jewish, I don't think they've given any games away for free, only DLC and Half Life for its anniversary

>Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R)
I am still pissed at what Nintendo did to the dev of this game.
Maybe we could have gotten a few more updates before those fags sent him a C&D.
Replies: >>280990
>>280978
Let's not forget though that AM2R was another shitass dumbed down remake for mouthbreathing casuals that felt the need to toss crap like Zero Mission's ledge grab and totally trivialize platforming in a game that originally didn't have it. It doesn't get a pass just because what Nintendo did was completely reprehensible and their own remake they commissioned was somehow even more appalling.

I don't bother playing much modern roguelike games (they're much more trouble to get running on my computer than old ones), but after reading all the threads about them and how the devs keep making the games worse constantly, I decided I'll only play the very first releases. Like instead of Cataclysm:DDA, I have the oldest version of Cataclysm from 2013, and I'm not gonna bother with later versions unless there's a major bug that I can't fix myself. Plus the part I said about building them applies here too. Usually later versions have more dependencies or requirements or something that makes building it more difficult. Just look at ToME 2 vs. recent versions for a good example of that.
As far as the Nethack bones files, aren't those just some files that exist in a specific directory, and so you could just download them and also have them loaded into your own private game on your PC? (I'm just guessing, never actually tried to do this)

>One Must Fall: 2079
A DOS-era fighting game. I have fond childhood memories of this game, and it's a pretty solid fighting game with a lot of difficulty modes (and a couple of hidden bonus difficulty modes and game settings - look up a cheats guide). If you like Street Fighter games, this is probably your jam. Also it has multiplayer support but good luck working that out through DOSBox unless you're doing hotseat. Apparently it was made freeware all the way in 1999?
