That's pretty much how the servers died. Only the ~3-ish people who had antag on got it every round and murderbone the whole server. Eventually people started hiding or blocking them off, so the entire server would be dead except the 3 crew alive and the murderboners hunting them. This caused people to drop off resulting in low pop rounds.

There was a time when it was 25+ players for a few weeks, but it slowly dwindled down over the course of a month due to sheer entropy and the drama you had pointed. 4chan's backend (PHP implementation but probably other things too) is 9 years out of date, matching with exactly when moot left, so its vulnerable and hard to update. This was abused and someone found a way to hack the website and gain Shell privileges a horrible worst case scenario. Every mod and janitor was doxxed. Also the website apparently has no devs. Also some admin chatlogs are being leaked, but not the ones on discord.
Someone made a post on the 4chan twitter that just says "IT TAKES TIME". If it was Hiro then 4chan is probably still dead on account of Hiro probably not knowing what he needs to do to get the website back up. If it was anybody else then maybe its coming back.

Apparently it was an old version of openBSD that hasn't been updated since 2016, when it was bought out, with over 190+ documented vulnerabilities.

The original 8chan throughout its history never had the kind of absurd 60000000/PPM that 4cuck had, it was slowly losing users throughout its lifetime and when Cuckflare shut it down oy gevalt the ensuing migrationary drama further dwindled the userbase to 0-10 PPH and ~100PPD levels on the two major post-8chan /v/ iterations at the time of the 4um's shartdown.
Given the long cultural divergence with the what I can only assume to be HRT and soyphone-induced >uncivilized posting style never taking off on either OG 8chan or its larger successors outside of gay NIGGER shills except for /b/ but /b/ was never good.
It also bears mention that a significant portion of the few users here are nearing, at or beyond wizard age with an inherent disdain for what modern society has become and are thus unwilling to adopt the soyshittery of the modern youth of their own free will, leading to a wildly differing style of discourse further affected by the post-Gamergate board infrastructure such as Webms with audio tracks and whatnot.
From a more practical perspective, it's easier to keep track of a small number of pseudo-General threads at a low PPH than it is to clutter the board with low effort threads focusing on shitpostlets instead of the larger benis, though given that the OG 8chan with its much higher PPH also worked that way not that one liner threads were forbidden from existing, they just had to spawn worthwhile discussions about Tifa's dicks to avoid being considered spam this may be simply part of the wider cultural divergence.

I'm currently playing VR games at the moment, I'm really into playing Into The Radius. And before my return to binging on those games i was playing basically mutliplayer focused stuff, in regular flat screen. Odd games, i found a really good GMOD Dark RP clone called Aneurism iv. It's like george orwell 1984 simulator and very good at being that. Which I'm unsure of the status of whether the game is currently dead or not. Interesting, in my experience every occasion I visited 4chan after 8chan I was met with the same few phrases and topics spammed ad nauseum at a blisteringly fast pace. I think the extremes on both ends are unappealing.

When it comes to freedom, however, I just don't think 4chan cuts the mustard. The event that caused the migration to 8chan was an open and frank message from the administration that free speech was not a goal and not supported by 4chan. Banning topics of discussion relevant to a board (without legal concerns) was ridiculous, and to my knowledge does not occur here. Beyond that, I've witnessed the absolute destruction of boards like 4/co/ under awful moderation practices that stifle what I'd consider the freedoms of the users.

I wouldn't say it's less free because I don't think I have ever gotten banned, but these boards very much do resemble the moderators tastes. Still, there is a reason why places like here have managed to survive for so long even if it is on life support. 4chan has one fun thread for every ten thousand shit threads, but since it has a much larger userbase it goes much more quickly and there's something that makes it all worth while every few months. No quality standards for ib's with smaller active users kills the userbase and it has already happened to the webring + 8moe a few times; it is one reason why we are so Balkanized.

Hacker News is a really good example of this and the entire userbase is significantly smaller than top science/tech subreddits.
