I would argue that divide and conquer works so well is because human beings naturally make distinctions among themselves. It only takes very basic forms of social manipulation for it to kick off.

I think the problem lies in most vocal people assume they're geniuses and that everyone in what they see as their tribe agrees with every single opinion they believe, including the ones they've never actually shared with anybody because they think it's common sense among good genius tribe.
