Archive of previous thread: https://archive.ph/K9xml

The purpose of this thread is to document and discuss Nintendo's recent actions towards censoring third-party games released on their platforms. As in, games that Nintendo has demanded that companies alter despite having no participation in any step regarding the game's development and release. This point on the subject needs to be emphasized because of two reasons.

The first is that people try to deflect such censorship practices for the purposes of so-called "regional differences", such as different regional laws and restrictions on game releases. This is not that issue as these are games that may have been released previously in the region sometime in the past decade or two, or the game is still being released unaltered on a competing platform like PlayStation or Xbox that still follows the same restrictions and/or even has their own. Second is that, despite censoring their own games, Nintendo actually has a history of leaving third-parties alone regarding what content is allowed to be inserted into their games, a topic I will be getting into in the following post. Regardless, if you JUST want a list of “all” instances of games being censored on the Nintendo Switch (And the upcoming Switch 2) regardless of reason, I suggest that you look at these two following links:
https://archive.ph/S0pfk
https://archive.ph/oaP9T

But why make this an issue? Back in 2019, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa made the following declaration in response to a question about restricting content present in video games released on Nintendo’s systems: https://archive.ph/RkxJm
>Q11: Regarding restrictions on expression. Some other platforms have their own restrictions other than third-party organizations such as CERO. How about Nintendo?
<A11: Nintendo entrusts a third-party organization with the task of providing objective ratings for its own products and third-party software prior to its release. If the platform operator arbitrarily chooses to do so, it would seriously impede the diversity and fairness of game software. The parental control function also allows for restrictions to be put in place.
In addition to this statement, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser recently made the following statement less than a week ago: https://archive.ph/nrYHD
<We always want to attract the best talent we can and retain that talent. We also believe it’s important for that talent to be diverse in terms of their backgrounds, their experiences, and their understandings because our players are diverse. So we strive to have diversity that reflects our players in our organization.
In some ways, it mirrors a similar statement that Sony had made back in 2018 when they were in the middle of their own scandal for censoring games released on PlayStation: https://archive.ph/X2wGz
There are also indications that this is an official policy coming down from Nintendo proper in Japan, based both of the list that you’ll see below (That includes Japanese exclusives and Japanese versions games being effected) and other people researching into the matter confirming details with other industry insiders: https://archive.is/ApYH8#post-1477584
On top of this, there are other strange policies going into place such the obscure region-locking of the Switch 2, which has one version exclusive to Japan (And Japan alone) and another version for the rest of the world, including regions neighboring Japan like South Korea and Taiwan receiving this “worldwide” version of the system: https://archive.ph/I9KmI
And thus, it is the purpose of this thread to make people aware of Nintendo’s actions regarding this entire matter. What you choose to do with this information is up to you.

Now that that is out of the way, here is a list of third party games known to be censored and/or had their release canceled on Nintendo’s systems. This will be sorted by year of announcement/release, with the effected titles being listed in alphabetical order:
>2022
<Hot Tentacles Shooter (Canceled)
https://archive.ph/rAxny
<Duel Princess (Pulled after release)
<Massage Freaks (Canceled)
https://archive.ph/akc2e
This year is considered to be an "outlier", with some arguing that these releases should not be considered a part of Nintendo’s recent actions given the large span of time between them and later events happening. I disagree on this matter, and think they should be included since they are effected by the exact circumstance being described, but I wanted to make this consideration known.

Now with the list of games that are reported to have issues over the past few years out of the way, it’s now time that I address the point that Nintendo did not “always” have this policy in play. In fact, arguably starting with the release of the GameCube in 2001 (Some may say with the N64), Nintendo was seemingly hands-off regarding the content released on their platforms (Until now). At the moment, the list you’ll see below is an incomplete and in-progress and it would be very much appreciated if you would help by expanding it. The current list almost entirely comprises of games with risque content, but has been suggested to see about finding games that would be banned or canceled for their violent content as well, given what’s happened to Christmas Massacre, Gungrave G.O.R.E., Death end re;Quest: Code Z, and the unknown fate of Daymare: 1994.
<Mature games on Nintendo’s platforms has ‘always’ been rare, with the few titles that did exist amounting to tokens, that have also since left. Effectively exceptions that proved rule that Nintendo’s platforms were not nor ever were a friendly environment for mature titles.
The problem with this argument is that it is assuming that “Mature” video games have been overly plentiful in the first place. First of all, when you look at official statistics provided by the ESRB about the amount of games that they process during the year, and what rating they receive, it is made abundantly clear that video games rated “Mature” account for a significant minority of the games actually released to the public. In fact, it’s the smallest category of games released, accounting for 12% of titles in 2024: https://archive.md/D5MdL
And 2023: https://archive.md/GU2bu
And 2022: https://archive.md/JBOlA
In fact if one were to go back 15 years ago, during the time and hype of the “violent gaming era”, and see what amount of games received what rating, it actually reveals that, of all the video games released in 2010, only 5% of them were given the “Mature” rating: https://archive.md/1Mgpm
With this knowledge in play, it seems to indicate that “Mature” video games have always been in the minority. Especially extremely “mature” titles like the infamous Dead Or Alive Xtreme series, the Manhunt series, and the Mortal Kombat series, all of which have seen releases on Nintendo’s systems.

In addition to this, Nintendo has always been chasing after the adult audience and wanting to release mature titles as far back as the Nintendo 64: https://archive.ph/NDf83
A significant portion of the GameCube’s marketing was making it appealing to teenagers and adults: https://archive.ph/OeIhL
Marketing with games like the then-recent Resident Evil 0 that was exclusive to the GameCube: https://archive.ph/OzcPd
Putting money into “Halo-killer” games like Geist, banking on the release of Resident Evil 4: https://archive.ph/PebED
And talking about how important mature titles are to a system’s catalog: https://archive.ph/8CYay
Then with the Wii, Nintendo reached out to third parties and demanded that they release mature games on their system, which is how it got games like EA’s video game adaptation of The Godfather: https://archive.ph/uaBoz
And Rockstar’s then-upcoming title Manhunt 2: https://archive.ph/1OJl1
And still putting their own funds towards developing their own mature titles like Zangeki No Reginleiv: https://archive.ph/gTuH
Which was a bestseller: https://archive.ph/qrlb
Iwata announced the Wii U as being a console for hardcore games: https://archive.ph/X1Le2
With Miyamoto re-affirming this statement: https://archive.ph/rHfTx
Nintendo announcing mature titles like Ghost Recon, Aliens, and Battlefield: https://archive.ph/Edb1R
Going so far with the Wii U being the first game console to launch with a game rated Z by CERO: https://archive.ph/DXZTH
And even publishing games like Bayonetta 2: https://archive.ph/mfjWz
And Tomonobu Itagaki’s much anticipated Devil’s Third: https://archive.ph/At4HC
And what more needs to be said with the Switch being another console where Nintendo wanted “Mature” games: https://archive.ph/VkrEe

So to put it simply, Nintendo’s platforms have almost always been “open” to mature games for the past few decades, and receiving a plentiful amount of those games as you will see in the list provided. And it’s these factors that make their recent reversal of wanting mature content so puzzling. So here you go, a developing list of previously released mature third-party games released on Nintendo’s platforms:

Yeah, not the best example to condemn censorship.
