Instead of frowning at the future, How about we celebrate the past?
One of the best years in videogames turned 20 this year, and I figured, Why not make something special for it?
There's this video that compiles footage of multiple games from that era, but I think it could be improved upon.
For one, it's 16:9 instead of 4:3, and it's missing some games. It would also feel more special if it's homemade footage instead of existing walkthroughs.
So just grab Unregistered Hypercam 2, or better yet, record your CRT TV with a shitty camera while you're playing a 2004 game:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:2004_video_games
The deadline is July 20th, so that you don't procrastinate, you wiener.
I'm down.

You might want to see about specifying some dimensions for clips, so nothing posted winds up being video-for-ants-tier and having to be blown up to whatever final resolution. I'll see about contributing a bit if I can get things set up right on my end. Do want to ask though, what's a good, free video editing (not specifically capture) program?

>it's 16:9 instead of 4:3
To be fair, some games did allow for native 16:9, even at that point. But yeah, best to keep things consistent if you ask me.

That reminds, there seems to be a trend to purchase 00s desktop cases with a certain aesthetic(white bulky with floppy disc) and reusing them with current hardware. This in turn is raising prices of old hardware pissing off retrofags similar to what happened with crts

I don't think there's a lot of jewry going on here, at least not beyond exploiting something that was already there. I remember when NZXT repainted one of their cases beige (with 5-1/4" floppy and 4X CD-ROM stickers on the front panel) as an april fool's stunt and the overwhelming consensus was "why can't I buy a decent case with beige trim and ODD bays?" The main thing keeping case prices in the stratosphere is that they were the first things to be recycled when old computers get tossed, so there are even fewer surviving examples than there are for things like motherboards.

>>249481
Low numbers is indeed a factor but not the cause. the main problem are the youtube fags creating “remember when…” videos and making retro shit popular. This in turn attracts the bottom feeders that buy out these products and scalp them

The fact that the wider compaq computers from 2002-2004 are priced at $100+ now is ridiculous

Here’s a tip, go to recycling centers or local elementary schools in the ghetto
btw I’ll never forgive the stupid faggot cunt that popularized the hot wheels desktop making it impossible for me to buy back my childhood items. I would’ve loved to have gotten one and play something from this era on it

Here's some homemade footage.
I couldn't figure out how to force a softmodded xbox into a 4:3 mode, so you'll have to do with a 4:3 video instead.
I also captured some "Crimson Sea" footage by mistake (it came out in 2002 , "Crimson Sea 2" came out in 2004 and I couldn't find the xiso). I realized soon enough that I fucked up and decided to just talk over the annoying voice acting for a few minutes.
The resemblance to early DSP videos is uncanny.

Spider-Man 2 (lights on)
Mech Assault 2: Lone Wolf
X-Men: Legends (as seen in the preview on Spider-Man 2 disc)

I got here some authentic, genuine footage of a badly recorded World of Warcraft pre-TBC PvP video that I personally made using pirated FRAPS and pirated Sony Vegas, back when I had no idea about codecs or encoding or anything. I think this was recorded using mjpeg on like 80% quality. It's really bad.
The quality is horrible, and in the clip I cropped some black bars off the top and bottom because I have no idea why they were even there. I didn't know what I was doing, but it's the only video I made. I recovered this video because I uploaded it to some website and managed to retrieve it over a decade later. I forget the website name now, but I think it died.
Enjoy the Thrice song, and the lag spike in the intro of the clip.

Here's the full original video if anyone's interested. It's nothing special.

Bury much so, albeit to a lesser extent than during the pre-AC'97 era of proprietary competing Soundcards.
These days you can either wrap the EAX/AL API calls with DSOAL, or in the case of Doom 3 use the dhewm source port with its native OpenAL EFX integration.

>the pre-AC'97 era of proprietary competing Soundcards
As someone who recently dove into this era with original hardware, it really doesn't seem like a big deal. Creative was such a leap forward at the time that after a while almost everyone settled for slapping either an OPL2/3 or a clone at port 388h, then putting a clone of the SBPro's I/O map at 220h/240h. MIDI-driven wavetable synth was a little more complicated until General MIDI got sorted but Creative's own incompetence was generally a bigger problem than competing standards, unless you were that poor bastard who bought a Gravis card.

You can use "Lossless Cut" for a simple cut job, and it's the quickest too because there is no recoding going on.
VidCoder is also relatively simple to use and can encode into webms, but there is no video preview, so you have to guess where to cut. Again, not a real problem in our case since we're looking for short, raw snippets of gameplay. So just eyeball it.
Shotcut is often suggested as a free as in freeforall software alternative to paid editing software like Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas, but I've never used it.

Or you could be a madman and jump into the deep end and use AVISynth (the editor)/AvsPmod (the GUI to actually let you use the thing). However, this is strictly for editing. You still need to encode it with something else, and I use ffmpeg to do it.
I haven't thoroughly checked, but a lot of programs will just accept AVISynth files (your editing) since it's been around for so long.
>>251973
I used Shotcut to make >>251785 and it's janky as shit. Adding transitions and effects is completely ass backwards and the export interface forces you to choose between movie maker tier and "we give you every ffmpeg codec because muh power users even though half the combinations will error out". It is, however, the simplest and easiest thing I've found that lets you drag and drop clips on a timeline. It should be just fine for your purposes.

Shotcut has its fair share of jank but it's arguably the most accessible video editing program that's free, so I personally recommend it.
>Adding transitions and effects is completely ass backwards
I've used filters ("effects") in combination with keyframes and overall their interface was quite intuitive, could you elaborate on the problems with faced?
>the export interface
The way to use the export dialog is to choose a stock preset first (e.g. H.264, VP9) then tweak its options like bitrate/CRF and such, that way there's no mismatch of codecs. There are only a few possible combinations for real world use anyway (VP9+Vorbis/Opus.webm and H.264/H.265+AAC.mp4)

Metroid Prime 2 uses non-square pixels at a 10:7 PAR, unless I'm mistaken most capture cards from back then would record the entire 4:3 NTSC video output including black bars on the top and bottom.
Might put an NTSC >filter on top as well for added authenticity.

Aspect ratio correction that rarely works, though it can easily be fixed by manually setting it to 10:7 with the custom aspect ratio option.
Of course you could also keep it at the squished ratio to emulate the early Youtube experience when no one knew how to operate Windows Movie Maker properly.

Yes, no. Second because it's like slapstick humor, which can also enhance enjoyment e.g. playing playing one of those old WWE games and making a custom character to see some famous wrestler get suplexed by some freak who looks like a bony homeless man with a turkey gizzard hanging off his neck.

You could also pose them in more dynamic poses (Master Chief is posed like a shy anime girl, lol), or if you want to go the extra mile, you can make the camera fly through the characters and onto the logo. The Medievil title screen is the first example that comes to mind.

3) the rest are recorded in hardware mode to avoid slowdowns which presented themselves after entering a slightly dusty area 5 minutes later
4) filters are often a bad choice overall and picking scanlines here makes the image darker and harsher on the limited bitrate

GTA IV has comfy car physics and a very detailed worl because it came out at the qualitative peak of AAA, but it has less overall gameplay than SA becuase muh graffix and the mission design features repetitive "go kill some dude"-type missions along with escort faggotry.
It does, however, precede modern ESG "values" and is set in a parody of circa 2006-2007 Jew York and not 2012 Soy Trannyfornia.
Downsides are that the game was developed for cuntsoles which on the 360 and PSTriple meant sub-30 framerates at the best of times and on PC resulted in a joke-tier port that needs various mods+cracks to work properly in CY+9.

DLCs fix a lot of the gameplay issues the base game had, the first one has acquired this meme status among /v/ due to CuckStar's endemic hatred of Jewish biker gangs or something in GTA V and later games and the second DLC while re-adding many gameplay elements from SA also has the most pozzed plot pre-V.

GTA V I honestly wouldn't, the PC port here is (or was?) competently done with much better framerates on AMD hardware than GTA IV but the gameplay and especially the story groan under the weight of the AAAAAA open world map.
Whereas in IV the console base resulted in a shitty PC port but otherwise didn't affect the gameplay too much, many of IV's small-but-important details had to be neutered both in order to make the game playable on the 360+PS3 but also to meet the dreaded online multiplayer requirement.
Examples of this include a much less complex and flexible euphoria physics engine both for player and pedestrian movement, car physics suck balls, many objects that in IV had their own physics and would scatter around during car crashes/explosions are now either fixed or gone with hilarious results given the worse car physics, police cars only no longer spawn in regular traffic, AI is far, far worse across the board compared to the complex behaviors of IV with Police no longer trying to arrest you, always knowing where you are even at 1 star out in the wilderness, NPCs and Police are now stupidly aggressive and will attack you for microaggressions no reason whatsoever, also Cuckstar removed some tranny parody NPC in an update a few years back so there's that.
The gay nigger online focus also means that while the base game shouldn't have any problems running on moderately recent hardware the game's radio stations are bisected to shit due to loicense expiration and practically require anti-semitic pirate restoration mods, not that V's soundtrack was actually good to begin with compared to IV.
All GTA games have this issue in CY+9 but the music licenses for IV took longer to expire, most cracks tend to use older versions ripped from DVD due to better mod support.

That's not even getting into the half-finished story or poorly designed map with virtually nothing to do past the LS city limits or that the game fails as a parody because the exaggerated Soy California depicted in-game doesn't differ so much from the real one.
>>255244
IV is unironically one of the worst and has little going for it besides some of the - at the time - fancy engine tech novelties, in a way mirroring III's strengths and shortcomings. V is in many ways superior and anyone denying this is a hivemind contrarian /v/edditor running their mental mantra "le old good le new bad". The IV expansions were somewhat better and I always found it ironic /v/edditors typically praise those despite the fact TBoGT had a distinct proto-V feel to it.
>>255244
What's the issue with the IV port? Never had any problems with it, always ran better than the PS3 version.

The IV port runs poorly under low memory conditions, when it came out many mid-tier PC gayman rigs would experience disappearing graphics and/or hitboxes along with frequent crashes and poor performance.
Not an issue today but you'll still need to manually put a -1 somewhere in the game's config ini for it to run properly because it thinks anything greater than 1024MB VRAM equals 0 or something.

>>255250
>Stories
Those games are basically alternate takes/"expansions" upon III and VC with a few additions from SA here and there.
I've only played the PS2 ports and found them to be alright, LCS is largely III with updated graphics and some refinements but not too different otherwise whereas VCS expands upon the gang war mechanic from SA by having you run various illicit businesses which generate shekels, can be upgraded and have to be defended from attacks by rival entities.

No idea about the GBA game other than it being considered universally shit.

Despite actually liking the game and even owning a physical copy from back in the day, I don't actually believe that Killzone should be up there with those other games. Killzone on its original hardware does not play well. It constantly lags and has a very poor framerate. I still enjoy the game because of its story, artstyle and other characters. I think the gem of the first Killzone game are the Helghast. They are very sympathetic villians. However, In terms of gameplay, Halo 2 is far superior.

Although I understand that the helghast are a strict patriarchy, I wish we got to see female helghast in the earlier games. There's something about women with masks that kind of turns me on.

Great to see there's a video for 2005 already in the works. I'll do my best to contribute gameplay footage this time, just gotta pick the game(s)... A couple of points I thought of:
1. It would be nice to show the game title for each clip, for example by briefly flashing the title screen before the gameplay, or overlaying the game name over the gameplay footage MTV-style.
2. Gameplay clips should not have any BGM, as to not clash with the music running throughout the whole video. If BGM cannot be disabled or muted, then the clip should be muted completely.

>Why not Pendulum? Specifically Out Here from the album Hold your Colour
The whole album is loaded with bangers. DnB music in general would work great for 2005, to me that genre defines the decade. If I would pick one track it would be HYC.

I love Hold Your Colour, Out Here was the song that immediately came to mind specifically because of Zone and Newgrounds. I think overall the pacing in Out Here flows better than HYC but I'd love either in the final video.

I'll play through some more but I just need a few pointers on making it look "better"
Already I'm thinking I should've stuck with 30fps.
Replies: >>269734

- Play at native resolution or an integer multiple of the native resolution (2x/3x/4x/etc) so the gameplay looks closest to the real console.
- Resize the video frame so there are no black bars around the game screen. Or better yet, adjust OBS/ffmpeg so it only captures the game screen to begin with.
- 30 FPS is good for video, anything higher would make the file size much larger.
- This one is a bit of a nitpick to minimize quality loss; capture video at lossless quality (CRF 0) then do the final re-encoding at near-lossless quality (CRF 17 or 18).

I couldn't even make it past the tutorial area because the mouse control is all over the place. If there's a better version you'd recommend I might give it a try.
>what kind of screen layout do you think would be best?
I personally like the default but to make the video period-appropriate you better try to emulate the Nintendo DS layout or just capture the top screen.
>about 11 hours
Try to pick 5 clips maximum, each no longer than 10 seconds at maximum quality. Considering how the 2004 video turned out, each game will only get 10 seconds of footage tops.
Also capture a few seconds of the game title screen.
>we still need to do this in 4:3, right?
Not necessarily, 2005 was the start of the second half of the decade where widescreen became more popular. The GBA and PSP are already in widescreen, so it wouldn't hurt for the video frame to also be in widescreen with pillarboxing where needed.
My personal priority list of footage resolutions:
<1280 x 720
<1024 x 768
<800 x 600
<640 x 480

Disclaimer: I'm a different anon than the one who made the 2004 video, but I'm considering putting together the 2005 video if the previous anon is no longer around.

The PS3 version is based on the PS2 Greatest Hits version, which is based on the PAL version, which has physics bugs due to running at 50hz. In case you guys softlock yourselves like that, pick the boot option without authentic or signed drivers, that'll boot you into windows environment.
Then go to their website, download the removal application (https://star-force.com/support/drivers/ at the bottom of the page), extract, launch it and restart PC after the prompt.

It's DRM that runs a service or a driver running constantly to see if you're performing any actions a game publisher would deem unbecoming. If it detects anything like that, it stops the game from working.
Because it installs a driver into your Windows directory, if for any reason whatsoever it doesn't launch properly, it bricks your entire boot because Windows doesn't want to start with shoddy drivers.

here's another blast from the past on the subject:

Ultimate Spider-Man (GC)
Played the ever-loving fuck out of it on PC
Very corny writing, but I didn't know any better and it oozed style.

Very few of those licenced cartoon games were. I remember the Futurama game was decent, which is just a little shy of this thread having been released in 2003 it runs on the same engine as Fallout 3, weirdly

A decent amount of games used Gamebryo/NetImmerse, contrary to popular belief it's not the engine's fault that Bethesda is retarded.

I'm always amused that Betehsda's games ran on the same engine as DAoC, an MMORPG that routinely had 200+ people in a single area. Sure, computers at the time ran at like 15fps from so many people, and sometimes the lag was literal seconds, but it worked.
It also had ladders. Really horrible ladders that maintained your momentum so you would fishtail up them the whole way since sticky ladders didn't exist, so the bottoms of them were littered with corpses due to the aforementioned lag.
Was fun, though.
