any se(a)men here? I'm considering joining the merchant navy as there are pretty much no other prospects or options left for me, can anyone tell me what it's like and if it's a good idea? do I have to become gay to join? is the pay + experience worth it? do you go mad being months at sea? 30+ little to no working skills, very little education and very very very very very desperate. I have almost nothing to leave behind besides what's left of my family.
bump

I don't know personally, but I've heard you can make some alright money as a commercial mariner. Add to that spending weeks or months at sea, still getting checks, but with really nowhere to spend it and you can save up a nice chunk of change, I'm sure

Where I've seen (non-mil) sailors post most often is on /g/ in various IBs. Literally every time they're asking about:
>laptops (self explanatory)
>where to DL manga/doujin (causes inevitable thread fracas)
>data storage (for holding lots of animu/vidya)
>sat internet (most all ships nowadays have internet, but service can be sporadic such as in the middle of nowhere, during a storm, or if the ship needs to use the net for something important; also theres probably 50 other guys trying to use it)

Lastly, you should probably ask yourself how well you do with a disciplined environment. If shit needs doing it needs to get done NOW. Much of my family is Navy, and those whove transitioned or had friends who transitioned to private sector said it's easi-er, but not necessarily easy. Theres also LOTS of Filipinos in shipping, and they're not JUST workoholics, they can make coal miners look like toddlers in a sandbox. Food for thought.

Whatever you decide, good luck and Poseidon protect ye.

also, stay the fuck out of Hormuz, holy shit does your question have the fuckiest timing, lol

not sure
2 weeks of vomit to get your sea legs, easy to make a good impression if you start early.
You are on a small ship in close quarters fastidious hygiene is recommended.
I assume the experience is dependent on leadership, a captain who is desperate to be liked would be a concern for me. This happens a lot, to be nice you have to do something out of the ordinary/special.
yes, ocean madness is real; regular cardio should help, like cleaning, polishing, rust mitigation.
you are leaving behind trees, plants and strangers.
Just join the French foreign legion, find a gold mine, start your own private military corporation and takeover a country or something

I was going to bump it myself but thanks for the assist

I read the minimum time at sea is 2 months and the maximum 6, pay isn't great for starters but as you said you're not spending a penny while at sea so you're just pocketing it untouched. as for laptops and games and whatever I can't imagine having much energy left for those, I read the jobs for the lowest ranks are rather grueling and shifts can last up to 12 h.
>Lastly, you should probably ask yourself how well you do with a disciplined environment.
yeah this and having to deal with a bunch of low iq niggers are my two biggest concerns. I am a bit of a hothead, I can 100% picture myself getting into an argument with whoever and then having to deal with that for months because it's not like you can just leave when you can't bear it anymore.
but I've got literally nothing I'm attached to on land, no real connections or friends, and my family is in shambles. if I disappeared, not many would care.
>also, stay the fuck out of Hormuz
yeah, unfortunate timing for sure, but I don't think I'll be able to stay out of it.

>2 weeks of vomit
what do you mean? I've traveled by ship a bunch of times before, even in not suboptimal weather, I don't get sea sickness
>>327702
I considered that in the past, I really don't think I have what it takes, also the idea of having to learn french and that most recruits are browns is a serious turn off. also I don't like the concept of being a bitch for another country, I don't really need that in my life. I already tried being a bitch for my own country's military but they turned me down because I'm spaztastic.

I would've thought this basket of nutters would've had at least one gay mariner tbh
