It works because the more psychotic you are the less likely you are to give up and the more time you will spend working towards your goals. It's an adaptive trait in a bad environment but it's maladaptive in good environments.

To become an hero, look for a gathering of NATO officers. Mercs will do, but instructors or intelligence officers are preferable. Then you must get a time and place where those people are concentrated and anti air defense is weak. Latter is very important. Hypersonic standoff weapons are way too expensive and if AA is strong, the Sukhois won't come. 

If you are lucky, the Russians will bomb the living crap out of the place and you will finally become an hero.
