FLCL
Witch and Familiar
I've never saved any of these pics. They've always embedded themselves in my brain.
The first is just because it's so utterly ridiculous/"lol randumb." The circumstances to have a beetle look up at a stool in wonderment is beautifully absurd.
The FLCL is because the ending jarred me so much. How calmly he murders his father, and then to suddenly go to "Hey kid, it's O.K. to kill your father." I just found so haunting and eerie. It's always creeped me out so much, and I feel I've never been able to appropriately express why.
The last is from Itou Hachi, same author as >>818 (The Nice Neighborhood Lady is the English title, iirc). I remember reading some of >>818 until I got to that point and thought, "I legit think I'm going to go to jail if I read any more of this manga."
Itou Hachi's works are interesting, to say the least. It feels like the final episodes of Evangelion, where you're not there for the plot or animation or whatever, you're there for Hideaki Anno's complete psychotic break. Likewise, you don't read Witch and Familiar for the "lol, funny anime Eeyore," you're there for moments like picrel, where you think, "Ain't no way the mangaka wouldn't devote a half page single panel with that soulless a look unless they weren't going through it themselves."
Also because more and more, that quote "Death is salvation" rings more and more true with each passing day. It's haunting, but unlike FLCL, I completely understand why.
