Hopefully this still counts since I am talking about the movie, but The End of Evangelion is terrible. It ruined the original series for me with its fan pandering and stupidity. I watched it a little while back, so I can't remember all my reasons for hating it, but here are some that I do remember:
Hideaki Anno loves talking massive shit about his fan base, calling them all out for being anime otakus ("I made this cake and I want to eat it too! It's not fair!"). So what does he do for the Evangelion film now that he has the money? He has Shinki fap to a topless Asuka, he has Shinji make out with Misato, who also promises him sex, and he has Shinji have sex with massive spirit Rei. He caters to all the fans who were wanking off to their favorite waifu. Straight up, Shinji doesn't even need to be in the film apart from being dragged by the star contender lady when he's needed.
"Yeah, but Shinji was a wet blanket from the beginning!"
I agree with this to an extent, but I also think his hesitations in the original series make a lot more sense given the daddy issues. He also somewhat grows in the end after having a psychological realization. In this, he's a fish on a hook, waiting for death. Then all the women are suddenly craving teh dick. Again, Hideaki Anno just giving into fans and then bitching about them simultaneously. Get over yourself.
I actually really liked the experimental angle taken at the end of the anime series, regardless if it was for budgetary reasons. I think it fits better with our focus being on Shinji's conflicts throughout the better part of the series (apart from certain episodes focusing on other characters). I also don't think it's as whack as people claim - seriously, if you've been following the anime dialogue, you know what's up and why everything's happening. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority for this, hence why there was demand for a movie.
I'm kind of tempted to sit through the reboot, though I've heard MANY complaints. Nothing specific, but if even diehard fans are giving it a solid "meh", I can't imagine it's anything better than what the original series provided.
