Wolfenstein 3d: Outdated garbage, was never good even back then. Not the first fps.
Doom: inferior to Ultima Underworld in tech and gameplay
Quake: Destroyed by Duke Nukem 3D
Quake 2: Awful compared to Half Life and Unreal
Quake 3: CS and UT were better competitive games
Doom 3: Overshadowed and outclassed by HL2, Halo 2, Far Cry , Riddick
Rage: Awful open world garbage
Doom 2016: Serious Sam but worse
Rage 2: More open garbage
Doom Eternal: Same with but with tranny colors and more spastic
Doom Dark Ages: Same with but a medieval coat paint

What's the appeal of this company?

Cuckchan tier contrarian bait
I like Quake and Doom, simple as. Great tech demos, fantastic shooters, Doom 3 was middling and Rage was forgettable but they came back with Doom 2016. Couldn't care less what they made afterwards and from the sounds of it, Dark Ages was awful. ID of today is nothing like the ID of yesteryear, just like with all other companies that survived this long, so it's a moot point to compare them anyways.

Commander Keen is pretty good. But id went to shit after they fired Tom Hall. They became a tech demo company, only useful for parting naive gamers with their hard-earned money on the incessant hardware upgrade train. Actually only in the beginning they could have been naive. By the time you get to Quake 3 and id is demanding you need a fast pentium with 3D GPU to play their boring deathmatch-only tech demo, even the dumbest ghetto nigger would have figured out he could just play Duke3D on a 486 instead. Yeah, they kept upgrading to play id games because Romemo made them his bitch, and so they became addicted sluts. So now you can understand why, in the Doom scene especially, there's so many trannies.
Yeah so I wouldn't even bother with anything past Commander Keen. But I will give their older Apple II games a shot.

Unlike the Valve thread, here's a copypaste:

I don't think Valve is a remarkable company and I think their history in gaming is quite overrated.

Counter-Strike: Basically the Call of Duty of PC. It's the biggest because it's the most accessible. It doesn't have the skill demands of Quake or Unreal, nor even more realistically oriented tactical shooters. It's not a bad game by any means, but it's nothing special except in regards to popularity because it was there to catch the people that got filtered out of arena shooters of the time.

Left 4 Dead: I love L4D.....that is, the first one, the one that wasn't made by Valve, but by Turtle Rock, before they were then immediately purchased by Valve. Valve itself would then go on to develop the absolute garbage that was L4D2, thus ruining the series.

Half-Life: Somewhat of a forerunner to "cinematic experiences" (barf) experiences in games, I remember playing the Orange Box on 360 as a kid and being thoroughly unimpressed by Half-Life 2. It was nowhere near the quality of Halo 1 and 2 or Gears of War as a shooter. It was a novel, enjoyable game, but ultimately just an average experience overall. Team Fort 2 never really did that much for me and again seemed to serve as a more accessible alternative to more demanding shooters. I was however quite a Portal fan, at least.

Dota 2: I'm more experienced with other MOBAs, but I think the art style of Dota 2 is quite ugly and I also think that MOBAs in general are a more casual alternative to RTS/RTT. I don't regard MOBAs as a legitimately competitive genre because of balancing issues, but I of course don't think that's any reason not to enjoy Dota or MOBAs in general. I just don't think Dota is that special.

All in all, I think Valve is simultaneously a slightly above average to mediocre company and their popularity is primarily due to accessibility on PC. They're the corporate man larping as a gamer's company.

Here's your horrid thread:

Wolfenstein 3d: Outdated garbage, was never good even back then. Not the first fps.
Doom: inferior to Ultima Underworld in tech and gameplay
Quake: Destroyed by Duke Nukem 3D
Quake 2: Awful compared to Half Life and Unreal

Doom 2016: Serious Sam but worse
Rage 2: More open garbage
Doom Eternal: Same with but with tranny colors and more spastic
Doom Dark Ages: Same with but a medieval coat paint

What's the appeal of this company?

Youre all a bunch of ignorant niggers.
Idtech provided the engines which were cutting edge and defined the bar for other game studios technical developments.
The game content that you all complain about was mostly made by raven software and spash damage studios.
The games themselfs as op mentioned it were subpar compared to other titles, but the technology was developed first and they didnt know how to use it properly.
Its true the games themselfs werent the hottest shit, but dont blame id software they are not the ones responsible, they did a good job with the technology that was available at that time, most games so praised would not be possible if it werent for id.

Unreal was the main competitor which kept up, it did have its upsides, but also its downsides, for example the load times in unreal engine 2 were horrific, even on modern high end machines, prior to late patches, the physics engine, while being way ahead of idtech was buggy as hell and prone to regular crashes.

Addendum, i was slightly drunk and pissy when i wrote that so i guess im the ignorant nigger for forgetting most of these games were actually done by id.
Enemy territory, wolfenstein, quake wars etc were made by said studios.
Doesnt change the fact however that id first and foremost is a engine company, thats how they made their cash and thats what they are good at, source and co were derived from idtech.
Most of those listed by op are just generic crappy fps games with edgy themes.
Still in ids defence they made the engines that defined gaming and most game studios that were highly successful did not make their own engines.
Also far cry was a shit game too with shit handling and cheapass storyline.
As for cs and cod, cs was a hl mod and not really tactical(try true combat mod for q3, that was real tactics) and cod started as a ww2 story similar to medal of honor.

Try playing the games using console commands trough a terminal only if you think youre this hardcore.
I like both Valve and Id games. I think they're both really good and they often upgrade on their own or their counterpart previous games. I also enjoy the quake and the source engines a lot for their time.
I wish people separated the engineers and programmers (that do the actual work) from the business drones that only sell the brand and the cult, because they often have nothing to do with each other and the programmers of the time would have gladly worked with each other if they could have done so.
>>313159
Idtech was important and their achievements deserve to be recognized, but Ken's Build Engine operated on an entirely higher dimensional lattice of non-euclidean autism.
Fucking thing clowns on both the Doot engine and early 3D engines, Blood puts Half-Life to shame in the environmental detail department as HL relied much more on scripting and had far fewer small objects that could be thrown around and shattered into tiny pieces themselves affected by physics.

Doom was cool in the early days, if you could get or borrow a 486 to play it on. It was a very different experience from other games at the time.
But now it's like, ok this has been done, and done again x100. I have no interest whatsoever in spending money to upgrade for another FPS, much less to play latest tranny Doom port that needs even moar hardware than Quake 3. I don't care about their HD resolution, fancy lighting effects, 3D sounds, or scripting/other features. None of that makes the game fun for me. It's like you don't make a dish better by dumping 50x moar of every ingredient plus some other random shit and heating it to 1000 degC.
Anyway I'm pretty tired of so many games being 3D. I'd rather play the gameboy Daikatana, or even just some old computer adventure games like I've been doing recently.

well yeah many post 2000s FPS are shit (especially after the CoD era). but doom and quake and HL have a shitton of mods that are really cool for relatively simple games. the last one i played was the quake brutalist modpack (which works on quakespasm strangely, and in my OS it only requires sdl2, libmad and libvorbis as a dependency) and it's a surprise how much can be achieved with such light engines and low specs

I concur. Maximizing public for profits sadly brought all the lazy normies to everywhere.
People became stupidier with time. Not only IQ degradation and relying more and more of their critical thinking to machines but the common normie don't even want read skills and stats.
I'm tired to see people asking stupid stuff like why their ice build don't do damage to the ice boss and they skip the whole "ice boss is immune to ice damage" text.
Still, I can understand simply not liking one genre of game, but at least be honest, say you simply don't like or are too dumb to understand instead of talking nonsense.

Ok but your Quakespasm engine isn't the same as the Quake from 1996, and your computer is much faster. Even the tools for making levels are all different. Let's see them make levels for Doom version 1.2 in DEU, on a 486 with 4 MB RAM and plain old DOS. It's not gonna happen. They can't even get around DOS. One of the troonworld people made a video some years ago to showcase all the old DOS level editors, and he couldn't get any of them to run. It's because, instead of CD'ing into the directory the editor was installed, he tried to run them from the root directory. So then those editors can't even find their config files, and it bombs. This only really works for simple tools like PKUNZIP that don't need config files and so you can run them from anywhere (and you typically have their install directory in your PATH environment variable, so you don't have to type the whole path every time).
I played many cool Doom wads in the 90's that were made with these editors, before troonworld existed. A bunch of those people have probably long since moved on to other things, and the few that remain have no doubt trooned out and they're running GZDoom with Brutal Deluxe mods and everything.
On another note, someone in another unrelated thread commented about how he enjoyed the Sega Master System version of Sonic and some other 16-bit games. Now that sounds more like my thing!
>>313252
>People became stupidier with time. Not only IQ degradation and relying more and more of their critical thinking to machines but the common normie don't even want read skills and stats.
'People' are exactly what they've always been. Most of the Internet up until the late 2000's was the domain of European and East Asian men, who are genetically speaking the only demographic with the consistent raw biological capability to have high IQ. Not only has the Internet since then reflected the racial demographics of the world (with China rightfully noping out behind a firewalled Internet), the Internet and all tech and media has followed suit. This means media including games catered for an average 74 IQ African (nigger) audience, 84 IQ South Asian (jeet), 87 Middle Eastern (sandnigger), and 89 IQ Hispanic (spic) audience. Subtracting the Chinese who again essentially have their own private gatekept Internet, you're looking at a 90% Internet and tech space filled to the brim with browns possessing an IQ close to two standard deviations lower than the European and East Asian males that media and games and tech originally catered towards before replacing them demographically. None of this should be any surprise to you.

The world was always these racial groups by majority. The difference compared to now is that they were rightfully gatekept out both physically and digitally in the past.
Hating valve and id games is low iq
I know this thread is probably rage bait but I do agree with OP. I played Doom and Quake and just thought that Arena Shooters weren't my cup of tea for the longest time. What people forget is that a lot of people play FPSs because they had friends to play with it.
That's why a lot of old games had always LAN play. If it was only capaign, Doom, Quake, HL, Halo, CoD, BF and dozens of games would never be that popular.
FPSs where the original friendslop type of game, even before MMORPGs. Every game is fun if you are playing and laughing with friends, that's why so much trash shooter games get so much appraisal. People will always say "but I had fun playing with my friends".

I know for sure that some games like Golden Eye or Perfect Dark are a horrible mess to play, even with dozen of mods and mouse + keyboard, but still have good memories of chopping friends and throwing laptop guns.
