The 7th generation kind of sucked for a large list of reasons, most of which had to do with ushering legions of normalfags into the hobby and connecting consoles to the internet. However, in hindsight the generation both lasted for a very long time (eight years from the release of the X360 to the Xbone) and marked the last time any console manufacturer would attempt to make a device that looked nice and let you do anything neat with it. The X360's HDD being easily removable and being stylistically consistent with its form factor is practically the product of a lost art compared to the modern spate of black and white rectangles that let you:
- Connect to the internet and buy live service microtransactions
- Post things to facebook with your always-listening microphone
- Fuck yourself in the ass if you want to change the hardware

I had a Wii throughout the 7th gen so I missed out on a lot of the X360's lineup and never got to interact with things like the Xbox Live Arcade when they were in their prime. However I recently got a fully modded X360 with the RGH set up and Aurora custom firmware installed, so exploring the back catalogue will be as easy as dragging and dropping files.

What must-plays are there from the X360's catalogue that I can't get anywhere else, or that would just feel better on the console?
Blue Dragon
Beautiful Katamari
Chromehounds
Dead or Alive Xtreme 2
Gears of War series
Lost Odyssey
Ninja Gaiden series
>Dumbass shitting on ps3 ex-exclusives
Oh man
Eh, I liked it a lot, personally. The generation was a lot more competitive than the prior one which was basically just PS2 domination.

>Banjo-Kazooie: Why didn't they turn this into a spinoff or a new IP

Also, the 7th gen didn't really attract any more normalnigs than the prior generations did but rather contorted and conformed pre-2007 average video game consuming people into the early modern homo normalsapiens by the end of the generation, when the 360 had morphed from an HD Ecksbawks with more Internets but also gayms into a device to connect to the Internet, buy live service microtransactions and post things to Xbox Live with your always-listening microphone+depth sensing camera combo.
Nintendo's utter incompetence with the WFC may have been a godsend for the Wii, as it largely kept the platform away from the most egregious forms of virtual judaism towards the latter half of the generation too bad the system itself was designed for dumb niggers and boomers.
The only thing that the Wii was good at was playing Gamecube games. Most of the Wii's first party games were just shit that the previous console did better and you can count the exceptions on one hand.

Wii Sports was alright for a free game. I can't say I ever cared enough about it to buy Resort. WarioWare is WarioWare. Once you play one you've played them all.
Neither of them justified the stupid chocolate bar controllers.
One understated issue with games of this gen is how every 3D game's environments all look the same, even if the characters have vastly different artstyles. Lighting and texture capacity were just enough developers refused to use simple stuff, but so lacking in v-ram and only a couple types of lighting. Its at its worst when you deal with grass or stone or metal.

Both GC and Xbox had their share of good exclusives and multiplats where the PS2 version was crippled in some way. PS2 wins in sheer volume but the other two (especially Xbox) had respectable showings.

Outside of what's already been listed:
<Deadly Premonition (A lot of people recommend the original look and feel of the original 360 version compared to the "Director's Cut" version)
<Operation Darkness
The following games I will be listed were also on the PS3, but they should "count":
<Burnout Paradise (Original PC release lacks the "Big Surf Island" DLC, remaster has it but is more prone to crashing)
<Enchanted Arms (The 360 and PS3 versions have console exclusive content)
<Fatal Inertia
<Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage
<Mindjack (Honestly an average game in "design" and a mess in performance, but I had a lot of fun with it)
<Moon Diver
<Quantum Theory (A GoW clone by Temco)
<Splatterhouse
<The Darkness
<Tron: Evolution (PC version is unplayable because of it's DRM)
<Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown ("Ultimate Showdown" is a remake in a completely different engine)
<Warriors: Legends of Troy
<Wet
Everything else is on PC or another console by this point.

Forgot to answer this earlier. The problem was that a lot of developers just defaulted to used the Unreal 3 engine, which is an absolutely disgusting engine if you actually look at the results it produces. Not saying this is universally true of "all" games, but it's often the case for the majority that I have seen.

Except it's an issue even on non-Unreal games. Games that otherwise really cared about their world its aesthetics, games that didn't give a damn about world or non-character aesthetics, games with otherwise super cartoony asthetics, games with good graphics, games with bad graphics all of them have this kind of texture issue.

Now I may be stupid but this could be a side effect of the PS3 and 360 using very similar PC-esque GPUs, with the PS3 using a slightly modded GTX 7800 running Sony's custom OpenGL analog while the 360's Xenon while somewhat more novel ran a custom version of DirectX9.
Both systems were also on average much more dependent on OS-level libraries for various functionality, unlike the prior generations where developers were more or less forced to cook up their own rendering pipelines instead of relying on UE3 or whatever was in the SDK the PS2 had renderware but even there developers often got creative.
Another reason may have also been the dramatic increase in texture and modeling budgets for each game, likely drawing off personnel which during the 6th generation would've worked on refining the lighting engine(s) and whatnot back then many devs were also some degree of polymath in much smaller teams not restricted to a single aspect of gamedev, but that also changed with the hollybloat of the 7th generation.

>those horrible flat dirt surfaces in the sonic and neptunia games
Ah, I see what you mean now. Yeah, I have to say that there's something about the way textures are "wrapped" around the models that looks very similar across a lot of different games. The PS2 had some traces of this - although that may have been due to a lot of PS2 games' level geometry being simpler/smaller and not needing as much raw texture data in comparison.

>>256675
Ignore whatever that other retard said because the issue is they had enough VRAM to waste that using high-res textures from libraries was practical for shit like the ground, but not enough horsepower for techniques like bump mapping that would keep you from noticing that the "hi-res textures" are just a fucking photo of some grass or dirt projected on to flat polygons. It's an uncanny valley problem: just detailed enough that your brain doesn't fill in the gaps but not so detailed that the gaps don't exist.

Sigma 1 I've seen best described as Ninja Gaiden Remix because they remained rather faithful to the original game. The Vita port of Sigma 2 also restores the blood and gore, that's why i call bullshit whenever Tecmo finds excuses (we lost the code!) for not developing a restored version on other consoles, like in their recent Master Collection, that still has that shitty purple mist.

Ackshually the 7th generation was the last time truly skilled vidya developers were in operation across the wider mainstream, but instead of developing gaem suited to their tastes and the underlying strengths of a chosen platform they were chafing under the demands of ((( management ))) that wanted hyp0r-reelizm hollywood graficks!!!1 with a simultaneous 360, PS3 and maybe a PC release which only the least amount of effort should be put in becuase PC is for nerds and doesn't enough money, also delay work on this here feature/mission/map etc. and put it in the post-launch DLC bracket which was extended again after an executive meeting with monetization experts from the ((( publisher ))), but don't forget about the day-one on-disc DLC goy!
Then once the 8th generation swung around using stripped-down PC hardware which by all means should've made AAA dev's lives easier because now they could just write amd64 code for the PS4/Bone and reuse it with higher res textures+increased draw distances for the PC release ESG reared its ugly head and promptly ((( diversified ))) western dev teams while gradually ridding itself of anti-semitic Japanese developers in the case of Soyny.

Is the PS3 with backwards compatability worth it or should I just emulate the games with looking good graphics?

Every PS3 still has full PS1 backwards compat, and PS2 software emulation, I'm assuming you're mostly interested in the latter. If the games you're planning to play aren't particularly rare it's very likely there was a "classics" port of them available on the PSN at some point in time, meaning you should be able to sail the seas and just install them on your console, assuming you have it modded.

Don't waste your money on a CECHA/B, it WILL shit itself in a few months and it's almost impossible to fix them when they break. Get a slim and a PS2 instead.

I forgot to address the main point, which in a nutshell is what anon says. There isn't much of a reason to hunt down those early models, they all had issues with cooling and will likely YLoD on you sooner or later, moreso considering they're 15+ years old at this point.
It just isn't worth your time, effort and money for one feature which already is present, albeit partially, in the most recent models and can be bypassed entirely by buying a PS2 for a fraction of the price.

Fats have a bunch of different reasons for blowing up.
>proadlizers (tokins to talking chimpanzees) in front of the VRMs going bad
>bumpgate: nvidia chips with bad BGA packaging that cracks from thermal cycling (this actually caused most RRoDs as well)
>PSU caps exceeding their useful life and failing
>random other ICs failing from operating in an oven for 5+ years
All of these problems can be fixed but you need an actual repair booth to do it.
>>260799
If you're looking to play PS1/PS2 games, just play them on an actual PS2. PS3 backwards compatibility has just as many problems as the 360's.

The crackers were already showing in the 6th gen with slower cinematic games.

The PS3 remake of the Japanese arcade game Dancing Eyes has been dumped and made available to the public: https://archive.ph/yR9uQ
The game is a varation of Qix about tiny monkey attempts to undress various girls by removing patches of the clothes. The game was originally announced in 2011 alongside Pac-Man Championship Edition and Galaga Legions, to the utter scorn of outlets like Kotaku: https://archive.ph/C2NxC
And officially canned less than a year later: https://archive.ph/dW0K
However a little over a week ago, someone was able to find a QA build of the game and managed to dump it: https://hiddenpalace.org/Dancing_Eyes_(Mar_10,_2011_Prototype)
Here are the only instructions at the moment detailing how to play it: https://xcancel.com/aldostools/status/1902060592510464179
<The EBOOT.BIN is a FSELF. It requires to be resigned as npDRM free retail SELF (EBOOT.BIN) using scetool.
<It also works on CFW DPEX or PEX with DEX patches to allow FSELF.
you can hack a 360 now just with a usb drive and a demo but it seems redundant now since you can basically have native 360 pc ports and if it won't ever get ported you can just emulate

That hack is a fucking meme, wait around for 20 minutes for something that has like a 30% success rate, no thanks. And that native port thing is only confirmed to work with one game so far, it doesn't mean you can easily do that with all of them.
>>270910
For the same reason Taito didn't sue Namco for Galaxian; it was different enough to be considered a fresh spin.

Okay, so how the fuck do you do that? There's now PKGs on the Hidden Palace page but the only other source for it I can find is an age restricted youtube video. It was added to the wiki page by the original dumper so it's probably safe, but I've spent hours trying to make sense of this crap and I don't want to just give up.

I think you mean black ops 2.
Here are all my emblems. They disabled emblem creation a couple of years ago. These are all dated at 2014 but i never made any of these. I just used a copy emblem bug to steal other emblems. Sucks that they removed it because i really wanted to make the Tomoko emblem

Black Ops 1, 2, and 3, along with Infinite Warfare, had emblems as far as I can remember. I think the reason they stopped including emblems is that Activision didn’t want to monetize players displaying crude images, like cocks and tits, on their profiles.

Black ops 2 has around 200-300 active players on 360. I would say mw2,mw3,bo1 has roughly 100-200 active players with mw3 having the lowest player count. I have not tried waw or cod4.
Only saw one other guy when i tried cod3 multiplayer and we played for like 10 minutes before he left after getting killed by my mine planted next to the flag.
I saw 2 other people playing dead or alive 4 when i tried it so i would call it pretty dead. I just wasnt very interested in playing the same 2 people that have been playing it for years on end when i suck at it.
Havent tried any of the halo or gears of war multiplayers but ive seen others say that the halo ones are dead. Which i find pretty surprising considering how beloved those games were.
Im thinking about setting up a rgh console that i have that is just collecting dust and trying out some obscure 360 multiplayer games. It should work with stealth servers.

What was going on with RPGs during the 7th gen?
During that era RPGs became action games. You go back and play something like Skyrim or Mass Effect 3 and it's jarring how few RPG systems they actually have, and Skyrim was one of the most RPG-y AAA games of that era.

A second question, why did this reverse?
Games like Forspoken and FF16 would have done quite well in the PS3 era, but the gaming community wholly rejects them now. Starfield would have been considered GOTYAY if it released in 2013, but it released in 2023 and was widely considered a disappointment. Even Avowed, which is a alright action RPG, faced heavily criticism for not being enough of an RPG.
It's marked shift and I can't pinpoint why or when it happened.

Even if you don't like Oblivion or Skyrim, the difference between them and these new games is night and day.

I don't think Avowed was a good RPG but the constant Oblivion comparisons are strange and irrelevant, they're fundamentally very different kinds of RPG.
Oblivion is a free-roam sandbox with many interwind systems, Avowed is a very linear action RPG with 100% focus on combat. It's closer to Far Cry than anything, and to reiterate my point; Far Cry 3 was beloved on release.
>>272831
>What was going on with RPGs during the 7th gen?
RPGs transitioning from being a PC-only genre, with the exception of the JRPG, to consoles. It started with a lot of the RPGs coming to the Xbox, like Morrowind and Jade Empire, and escalated during the seventh gen.
>A second question, why did this reverse?
Because PC gaming has overtaken the dominance of console gaming. Why play the latest shitty AAA RPG when everything from Balder's Gate III to Underrail exist? Even Disco Elysium deserves some credit for being a solid classic RPG that some literal whos shit out.
