I want to play 4th gen games on my PS3 but the DS3's d-pad sucks.
What's a good third-party USB controller with a great d-pad?
I wanted to get a defender since it's specifically made for the PS tripple but it's like 50 bucks.

I don't know, I just use a cheap logitech F310. Works good enough for my emulated games

Did the other controller thread reach post limit already? Well damn.

I bought a Dualsense on a sale for $30 now over 3 years ago. It has its problems (software) not being detected or double detected using ds4windows that will usually require me to toggle a few specific settings or use a mod to change ingame button prompts to get it working right, and you can’t really take advantage of any of the unique features, but its served me well without much complaint and still has no signs of wear. No stick drift still and the sticks are very sensitive and accurate. Im actually surprised because i used it alot.

The only problem i havnt fixed is the stick snapping back to center so hard when i flick it, that it goes beyond zero and can cause my character to about-face which can be frustrating. Its not an issue with many games and can probably be fixed in software by increasing the deadzone, but i think some games use their own settings and override the ds4 windows settings.

The d-pad is way too small and flat.

It may be a prototype but the whole thing looks like it can fall apart at the slightest shake. Also I can already see it where someone will move the track ball accidentally while trying to reach the buttons around it. Is this an open source project or a load of nothing that will never see the light of day?

I think Dualsense or dualshock or whatever the PS4 controller is called is better overall. Grab it if it's less that $10 more expensive than the F310.
My F310 served me well for years, it only gave out after years of bashing it during fits of nerd rage (I'm working on it).

I am frustrated that more third parties aren't using the "hybrid dpad" design from the XBawks Series controllers. I very badly want one in a symmetrical layout, but after much autistic searching, it seems as though the only one with the layout I want is the Scuf Envision/Pro, and I have about 0 interest in paying almost $200 for a controller.
Replies: >>252920

Fuck it, I saw Best Buy was doing a sale on the Pro in white which brought it down to $130 so I caved and will be giving it a shot. Worst comes to, I can always return it.

Best Buy has an amazing return policy. I bought a bunch of PC part from them and then decided to return them when I found a better deal else where. I returned over $800 dollars with of stuff and they didn't fuss over it.
Replies: >>252925
>>252924
Yeah, I try not to abuse it, but every now and then I use Best Buy as a rental place to check out any hardware I'm potentially curious about. All they'd have to do is have a small section of shit to put hands on and I'd buy/return far less, but I also understand that "small" section could balloon quite quickly. Still, a section to hands-on keyboards and mouses is ubiquitous, but not controllers? With some of these fancy-pants third-party controllers costing the same as a high-end keeb/mouse, you'd think they would benefit from having people see them and checking them out.
Regardless, I'm hoping I like this controller. I've realized I play far more games via d-pad than with analog stick (everything 2d, tank control 3D) and my poor thumb is tired of being cramped. The DualSense was much more comfortable in the hand for me than the Dualshock 4, but the d-pad is abysmal compared to the "Hybrid" XBawks one. The chinks need to get it together and start making more symmetrical xinput controllers.

>>250721
I can second this recommendation. It has some minor niggles I'm not super fond of, but it's inexpensive and I am very pleased with the build quality.
>>251415
Actually the wire is charge only on one of the wireless version.
>>252920
Controller arrived earlier today, and initial impressions are better than I anticipated.
Damn near every button on this thing is a mouseclick microswitch - dpad, face buttons, "SAX" buttons, 2/4 rear paddles, and even the triggers can be switched from analog to clicky buttons. It feels wildly responsive, so much better than the mushy shitty XBawks controller's buttons that the comparison isn't even fair to make, and the dpad feels even better with less travel necessary for actuation.
I haven't had much free time to play with it yet, but I did spend some time playing Rabi-Ribi with it, and I managed to beat a boss on the first try that I'd been struggling with for a bit. Certainly I can't entirely attribute this to the controller, but it's definitely a good sign.
This next part is entirely subjective, but I would say it feels good in the hand. I think I still prefer the way the XBawks and Dualsense conform to the hand, though that may change as I grow more accustomed to the controller. The analog sticks seem more comfortable to use than I'd anticipated they would, but I haven't played anything with them yet to really test that out. I'm not really big on the paddles and side buttons, but the controller does give you the ability to remove them and comes with plugs to insert in their place, which I may do. I've never found myself in a position where I need more buttons, and the actuation of rear buttons on any controller I've tested it out on feels bad. The "G" buttons along the bottom of the controller are also pleasantly easy to reach, but are also something I don't see myself having much use for right off. Volume adjustment is cool, but I mostly just use my TV remove for that.
On the subject of my TV, the biggest frustration I have with this controller right off the bat is that there is no "XBox/PS/Home" button, nor is there any way to map that action to any of the buttons. I do almost all of my controller-games-gaming on my TV, and being able to swap displays, move to my couch, and hit the XBox button to pull up Big Picture Mode was excellent, and I am going to miss being able to navigate entirely by controller.
In conclusion, my initial response leads me to believe I'll probably keep it. I'll see how it holds up in the hand after some longer sessions this weekend, but for now I give it a thumb up.

Correction: I am a dumb nigger, the "Xbox" button is the most obvious one, looks like a power button. Don't know why I never bothered to press it until accidentally, then it was made obvious.

The Dpad sucks donkey dick, if you hold down on any one direction and shift it perpendicularly, it will register the input for those two other directions.

I wish the DualSense was cheaper, it's my dream controller from what I've played with it before at friends' places, but it's not worth it for me right now. I wish Sony would stop adding random garbage to their controllers for the sake of gimmicks only to bring the cost up exponentially, and gave us something more accessible, they've gotten way more expensive in the last few years.

No wonder they are scarce. The judges let autozone get pissy over powerzone but they simply give the little guy tons of money for no reason? I hate judges so bad. Controllers needing software updates is the reasl reason I chimp out at the 8bitdo though, not the cramps really. If you can find it for cheap, it's a good deal you probably won't regret, but I wouldn't say it feels premium or anything, mine even had the directional pad get stuck sometimes until I removed the thing and cleaned it up well, so that was a bummer, but it works. Find it for cheap? I learned my lesson about buying controllers secondhand unless you're talking about a refurbished unit. Also, how long did it take until the d-pad broke down? I used to have pic related and it worked well enough for about a year until the left joystick called it quits and drifted severely.

I was thinking more about buying it on a deal like those from AliExpress or Shopee every once in a while, a price drop, not used. I've also never been much of a fan of second hand, so I get you. It took a few months, it didn't break down, more like it just kept sticking to the side instead of going back to the center, like an analog stick with drift, but cleaning that outer disk fixed it, so I guess it just builds up dirt there too easily for some reason, but it's fixeable.

these exist. I am very happy with build quality, and I've seen consensus from those familiar with both (I am not one of them) that the Retro-Bit has a better dpad. The keymapping can be kind of weird, but it's not hard to correct that. I recommend it. The wired version is very thrifty as well, not expensive at all.
