It's been a while since I've seen people talk about the original shooter genre, so let's have a thread dedicate to that. What's some of your favorites from this line of games? For me, my favorite was always Galaga Arrangement because of the enemy patterns and the music.

I'm playing Dariusburst CS and loading up something random in MAME every other day so I don't burn out clearing AC Chronicle mode. The soundtrack is amazing, even if most of it is recycled.
I want to know who came up with "shmup" and why everyone thought it was a good idea

shoot 'em up. shmup. It's easy, and way better than the retarded Japanese term STG, meaning shooting game.

Do you believe that rail shooters are the natural evolution of shmups? Shmups have always struggled to convey character and personality, especially after the advent of 3D graphics. I often get the impression they're just marketing themselves to the same group of old dudes who played them in the arcades.

Rail shooters make use of 3D graphics in a more natural way, and they often have better characters with more personality (that is, they actually have characters instead of faceless spaceships). The spectacle common to many levels helps too, whereas shmups can suffer from being too static and repetitive, or having levels become lost behind a sea of explosion sprites and bullets.

>do you believe that rail shooters are the natural evolution of shmups?
Not necessarily. Both are different genres with different playstyles that both merit their own niches.
You're right about the spectacle part though, since rail shooters can afford all that much more visual flair and spectacle. They've definitely got more edge to them, on contrast with the regular shmump that already struggles with bullets not bleeding with a BG that's not plain black; with some variation of enemies moving in a 2D plane you couldn't care less what you're shooting at.
Song related is still GOAT shame about the soundtrack being so underwhelming compared to how the music plays in-game.

No, he entered a bout of depression and hasn't recovered. Complained in the past about how he made a shit game and didn't deserve any of the recognition or sales it got. Double Action has been in stasis for over 6 years now.

I think the reason I love Starfox (and other rail shooters, from the few that I've played) but don't care about shmups is almost entirely shmups' lack of personality. How would you retain the pure 2D shmup gameplay but inject enough character and personality for people to care about what's happening on the screen?

How do you feel rail shooters show character and personality?
I enjoy every kind of shooter, by the way.

Most of this is from Starfox, but what I like the most are:
- Squad chatter, with banter between you and the bosses.
- Allies and enemies that react to you completing certain objectives or taking hidden paths.
- The rival characters whom you can fight in multiple incarnations.
- Varied environments that have a serious effect on gameplay, like heat hazards or strong winds.
- More than one playable character, even if it's just for a few levels.
- Audio or text logs that provide context for the levels and actions of the player.

The (few) shmups I've played seem pretty sterile and don't demand too much from the player outside of the core gameplay, which can be very complex or hard to grasp. Despite being a >euroshmup, Tyrian fucking nailed all of the non-gameplay stuff and it just oozes personality; I sometimes think about it years after having played it, which I can't say of any traditional shmup.

>chatter
Hellsinker, Radiant Silvergun, Dariusburst CS and Silpheed (Sega CD) all have at least a little. Touhou games have a lot. Mamoru-kun Curse has a good amount if I recall correctly.
>optional objectives/paths, and characters reacting accordingly
The Darius series is built on alternate paths, but there isn't much in the way of character reactions. The KiKiKaiKai/Pocky and Rocky series has a good amount, as does Mamoru-kun Curse.
>rival characters with multiple incarnations
GigaWing has the black plane (who eventually becomes the true final boss if you 1cc), and Mahou Daisakusen/Sorcer Striker has Bashinet show up with bigger and badder mechs every couple levels. Touhou again, but usually across multiple games.
>varied environments with gameplay effects
Mahou Daisakusen again, with a level that floods, affecting your movement. Whip Rush has your speed capped low if you go underwater. I think GleyLancer also does it, but I'm not sure.
>more than one playable character
Mahou Daisakusen yet again. Touhou yet again. GigaWing again (there are even complete story paths with both good and bad ends for every combination in two player mode!). Batrider, Batsugun, Twinkle Star Sprites, Parodius, Gunbird series, Castle Shikigami, and those are just the ones I remember right now.
>audio or text logs for flavor
ThunderForce V and Hellsinker have a few unlockables along this line, but I don't think I can name any others off the top of my head. Maybe the R-Type Finals (astoundingly grimdark setting, by the way).

Personally i am excited for Yuzo Koshiro's new MegaDrive game "EARTHION"
looks sick for a Mega Drive game, and the sountrack is what you would expect from the legend himself.
Can't wait to play it on my chink handheld

I agree, giving some context and have the pilots talk and comment wtf is happening and why would help a lot and add morr immersion.
You don't even need to make cutscenes (even if impactful short ones wouldn't bother me) you just need a character portrait with dialogues anime style.
Platinum's "Sol Cresta" kinda did it right, but so far no one did it better than StarFox.
I would like Shmups to take care and develop this aspect more.

The Saturn has a tamer set of CGs that features no nipples on the girls or much action, but otherwise sex is implied. Even with that yellow +18 warning that's on the cover I doubt they'd have gotten away with the uncensored CGs if they tried to. The main characters are siblings.

On the topic of Steam Hearts, what drunken Autism Magic did ZUN pull to get his 2hus scrolling at 60fps while most PC-98 scrollan gaems resemble the original Steam Hearts release?
What the fuck is the Aspect ratio of Area 88?

Did anybody else play Devil Engine Ignition? I thought it was pretty good. It's a shame that the Ignition expansion got delayed by four years.
