I've never been more tempted to post a bunch of soyjaks in my life and I fucking hate soyjaks.
SMBW is the kind of thing you'd see on the eshop back in the 2010s for 20 bucks, and the only reason that people are excited is because Mario actually does the box art pose when he jumps for once.
Sonic Superstars looks okay but the story of it's development has ties to the Mania crew fiasco, and just thinking about that makes me sick to my stomach. Fuck Sega.
i think that the sonic game is going to stink, it has that usual dimps quality you would see on sonic 4 episode 2 or sonic rush adventure.
as for mario wonder, it doesn't look like it does enough to differentiate itself rom the NSMB series for my liking and i hate that they turned yoshi into the retard mode. so if i had to choose, i would go with mario, mostly because of the mario rpg remake, which looks a bit bland on the UI side but otherwise seems faithful.

Super Mario Strikers
Some streamer fag showed the sanic game off. The final level is a 14 minute trek backwards through the previous level, rife with forced elevator and antigravity laser dodge sections, and instant deaths. And the true boss is 8 minutes long.

But it wasn't made by Sonic Team (much like the awful Sonic 4 wasn't), it was made by Arzest, Naoto Ohshima's studio known for Balan Wonderworld, and tiresome 2D platformers like Hey! Pikmin and Yoshi's New Island. It's also made up of a lot of staff from Ohshima's previous studio Artoon, which made even more bad Yoshi games and the unironically decent Blinx games. I'll say this, everything I've seen of Superstars seems better than what I've seen of almost every title I listed including Sonic 4. Shame we didn't get a new Mania from that team, shame Sega fucked over the few of them that worked on Origins, and Superstars is not a good replacement. Compared to Wonder it's a fucking joke of a game, but that's true of a lot of Sonic games compared to even the worst of the New Soup games.
>>222250
Personally, I'm glad they are not doing a Mania 2. There's already dozens of Genesis-era Sonic romhacks. A lot of them being pretty good.

Sonic is certainly a cursed IP where it fails too often trying to be different but also spends too much time trying to rehash the same shit. And nevermind how it always is in the shadow of Mario who can do no wrong. Sega should at least not make shitty tv tie in games for their flagship IP or really anything with Sonic since they only seem to screw everything up.

It's okay. The Wonder effects essentially give every level a pretty significant twist on the level's main challenge (or I guess the colloquial term would be gimmick) which is neat. Definitely more on the side of what World was trying to do, which is also what the New Soup games were trying but it's less like shit made by interns this time. I'd argue it's probably a lot better than most of the New Soup games, but I also just really like the shell from the first one and nothing in Wonder has beaten that yet so 3D World is still probably my favorite recent Mario game (what do you mean it came out almost 10 years ago?).

I just got it as a Christmas present.
Here's my first thoughts:
>I like the characters models and animations of both characters and enemies, they feel more "cartoony" in a good way and "alive" compared to NSMB, the enemies even react before getting hit, looking scared.
<I hate that they are still using that shitty fake 3d flat style for the stages, they should have went full "Kirby Star Allies" and make the stages fully in 3D with the 2D gameplay, this sadly reeks of NSMB all over again and kinda clash with the high quality characters, that shit was fine in the Wii era, but today looks cheap and outdated. (my biggest criticism)
>The new upgrades are quite fun and imaginative, and the pins that give you different, additional abilities as you equip them is a nice idea
<The flower kingdom is pretty uninspired to be honest, it doesn't look that much different from any other world in NSMB and the flower people are just lame reskinned Toads, really unimaginative and boring
>I like the music and the sound effects, all the voice samples are finally new and not the same recycled shit that we got the past 20 years, even the jumping and fire throwing sfx are new.
<Bowser is STILL the main villain
>There's no time up, something i always hated in Mario and Sonic 2D games
>The wonder flower is a really neat idea and ultimately what really makes the game stand out compared to NSMB
>I like we finally got some new enemies rather than the same ones from the original SMB and SMW.

All in all, i think they made a step in the right direction but not enough, and it's disappointing how it is STILL too similar to NSMB, which is the biggest let down.
It's like when Sonic Mania didn't reach its full potential because the retards at SEGA thought that people wanted to play Green Hill Zone for the 3450th time rather than have only new zones.
What the game needed to reach its full potential?
Fully 3D stages (while keeping the 2D gameplay of course)
Make the Flower Kingdom and its inhabitants actually different rather than making just a reskinned Mushroom Kingdom and reskinned Toads.
Have a new, cool designed main villain
More upgrades and transformations
I still have to finish it, but for now Super Mario Land 2 on the Game Boy is STILL my favorite 2D Mario game.

That's why i liked Super Mario Land 2 so much, it wasn't about saving Peach, it wasn't about defeating Bowser, it wasn't set in the mushroom kingdom.
It was different and new but still very much a Mario game.
I don't know why they didn't bring back Tatanga at least in the Galaxy games, since they were set in space and all.

>>Mario or Sonic?
During the SNES vs. MegaDrive era, Sonic was much better than Mario, and when Crash came out, it was better than both of them combined.
Then both Sonic and Crash got a bunch of shit games and godawful art direction while Mario managed to stay somewhat consistent quality wise, so ultimately Mario won in the long run, he lost the battles when Sonic and Crash first came out but he won the war.

Just finished Sonic Superstar.
All in all, a huge "meh".
I was happy to see what SEGA should have done ages ago, meaning the classic Sonic gameplay in a 3D world.

I played on the Switch and man, graphics are fucking garbage, all textures are washed up and the worlds feel empty and lacking any kind of detail.
People are justifying this shit with the excuse that the Switch is not as powerful as the PS5 or Xbox series X but you don't need that much power to make a good looking 2.5 cartoony game.
Kirby Star Allies looked very good and it was an early Switch title, so no reason for this one to look as shit as it does, that is just the developers being shit at optimizing, lazy, and nothing else.

Gameplay is decent, physics are very similar to MegaDrive Sonic games and Mania.
The bonus stages are way too fucking much, one on every stage like in the MegaDrive games was enough, but here you can play sometimes 3 in the same level and that breaks the game flow too much, and it's not like they are any fun to play.

Speaking of breaking the game flow, the new power-ups were totally unnecessary and require you to select them with the right stick first before pressing the button to activate them and once again, this breaks the pacing of the game way too much.

The level theming is really uninspired, while they are supposedly all "new" zones, they are nothing we haven't already saw thousands of times in Sonic games, with only the 3D pixel world being actually original, that was pretty cool.

There's a stage with a timer that you need to constantly reset to zero by pressing some buttons that you can sparsely find in the level, if that wasn't lame enough, you can't even play at your own speed because the level is full of timed platforms and obstacles, so lots of times that timer goes to zero and you die simply because you were waiting for that fucking timed obstacle to activate and clear your path, fucking infuriating.
That level is so shit that make you want to just run to the end without collecting anything, but to make things worse, the layout is so fucked that you often don't know where the fuck you are supposed to go.

The animated cutscenes are actually very good.

The final boss battle is way too tedious, it goes on and on and on...
It's not even a matter of difficulty, it's goes on forever and takes way too many hits to go through its various phases.

There's a new character to unlock that is uninspired garbage, looks like some shit that Chris-chan would come up with, she's the classic "let's take the Sonic design template, now change the color, the clothes, add some spikes and boom, new character!"
At this point they should stop making "new" character if they all look the fucking same.

When it was announced i wanted to be optimistic about it, but modern SEGA is fucking garbage, every shit they develop is subpar garbage, you can't even expect them to put some serious effort in their biggest series.
They really should have let the Sonic Mania team develop this one, it's not the worst in the series but painfully mediocre, too bad because the potential was there, but SEGA can't do nothing that isn't half-assed.

How much "power" do you need for a 2.5D platformer? Are people seriously going to argue that you need a fucking NoGames5 just to play a game that's no more complex than SSE in Brawl?

>How much "power" do you need for a 2.5D platformer? Are people seriously going to argue that you need a fucking NoGames5 just to play a game that's no more complex than SSE in Brawl?
People are justifying developers' laziness with the excuse that some platforms aren't "cutting edge" in terms of power, but other games on the very same platforms proved that you don't need an absurd amount of power to make a good looking game that also runs well.
As you said, we are talking about a 2.5 cartoon platformer, it's not some sort of open world realistic shit.
Hell, LittleBigPlanet on the Vita looked much better than this, speaking of 2.5D platformers.
The issue is that many developer go like:
>"Oh so our game doesn't run as well in this weaker platform? Alright, let's decrease the resolution, the polygon count, the textures resolution, remove the shadows, the particle effects, the dynamic lights until it runs somehow smoothly"
But then do NOTHING to make up for those elements that were cut.
Like, you need to decrease the polygon count?
Redraw the textures in a way that the models look just as detailed.
Dynamic lights and shadows take too many resources?
Draw the lights directly into the textures (like Team Ninja does) and use some shadows that aren't as demanding.
Dynamic elements like hair, capes, flags, slow down the game?
Animate those manually.
Don't just downgrade, remove shit, and call it a day.

I think all the mania devs are off doing their own thing after sega fucked them over.
