Anytime, I'd add that you can also rent a virtual server instead of buying a computer. Those usually have a permanent IP address, and many of the companies in that business will also sell you domains with them in a single package. You could even write your own software if you want to give it a try, but you need something that shits out an imageboard if a request comes in.

Making a basic forum is pretty easy. Hosting is easy too.
The real challenge is keeping spam out. You need good moderation tools to deal with it, which can be difficult to implement.
Also finding users. Users need to have a reason to visit your board.

For hosting I'd get a VPS. Hosting from home is possible too but can be annoying if you don't have a static IP and probably impossible if you are behind CGNAT. You can get the cheapest VPS and forward traffic over Wireguard to your local computer if you insist on hosting locally.

If you want to write an image board from scratch: I don't know how much experience you have but if you want something working quickly I'd look into Python Flask. I find it very useful for web pages that need to do a non-trivial amount of work in the backend.

I started looking into php because I'm interested in hosting dynamic websites generally. apparently a lot of early social medias including early image boards, were made with that. also, modern php apparently offers more options when it comes to security and it would be more modular than using a dedicated software. still, I have no idea if I'll even stick with this project.

It's not my first time seeing someone asking how to host an imageboard.
The most important thing in an online community is, well, the COMMUNITY and the social aspect. The technical aspect is secondary. So instead of asking how to host an imageboard, ask how to gather a community of like-minded people that would need an imageboard of their own.

I completely understand OP. I have at least two boards I post on that are dead and I'm the only regular poster. I post on them because the non-dead version of those boards are just insufferable to the point that I'd rather post alone and to the void than with them.
It's kind of like the "Would you rather tell your feelings to a tree or a woman?" meme. Well, sometimes you'd just as rather post on a dead board.

it wasn't like this. the site was /tech/ haven in the last decade. kalyx hated pseudo intellectual shit. xhe wanted people to go out of their room and experience before posting. when the arisuchan drama commenced and xhe left /hum/anities was added, /cyb/erpunk was fucking deleted and the site started dying because leftypol intellectuals, 420 refugees and tiktok users saw it as a vent board for their views and their drug trips. doesn't help that the board was also wiped so all the good /tech/ /diy/ /prog/ threads are missing.

Personally I found 4chan a weirdly useful tool to organise my thoughts.

Running an entire personal imageboard might seem a little excessive but it's curious how the format can be adapted for personal use.

images and files associated with text, backlinking and greentext my previous thoughts.

I'm not really familiar with much software so maybe there are dedicated programmes that enable this already and other features.

well, you are in luck, i started mine this month and i can tell you all the easy steps i took while they are still fresh in my mind
>step 1: choose a programming language. haskell is a good choice
>step 2: write a http parser. it has a pretty easy format that can be processed just by seeking and slicing the string. also you can ignore 97% of the headers
>step 3: write the rest of the backend. it is just shoveling data into a database, it doesnt get easier than that
altho you might wanna do some processing on the data first. like if you let users post text, obviously you should escape special html tokens
>step 4: install tor and generate an address. dont listen to the jews ITT, you dont have to pay a single dime to host LLM spam online
>step 5: be careful where you post the site's address. there are plenty of niggers out there who enjoy ruining nice things
>step 6: optionall also host over i2p and maybe even yggdrasil if you are feeling autistic
and that's basically it
it took me about 1 month to create it, but that's bc i was still learning haskell and got sidetracked to study category theory several times
knowing what i know now, i could prolly create a new one from scratch again in 3 days tops
anyway like the other anons said, the actual hard part is getting ppl to use it and not letting them ruin it
but if you are so eager to have your own ib, surely you already have a social group willing to use it

Maybe a video game board could have that and a tech board you would have to fix a line of code and for art you'd have to draw a picture of squares, circles, basic shapes, or perform shading or something before being allowed to post. Too bad the imageboards are all the same. For the pol posts you could take a political test first and a myer's brigs block could send you to whichever politcal branch you belong in as hidden boards so as to mitigate poltard drama. /b/ of course should be a sliding puzzle, of which is poetically what /b/ is. Punny isn't it? I'd never turn any captcha off as it seems unwise. I'd call it straightjacketchan.
