I know what you mean. There genuinely was an unique feeling in the early 2000s for young people, the emergence of the internet, which back then still had infinite potential, like some sort of alternate, magical digital world. There are tons of shows about this, most notably the first few Digimon seasons (esp. Frontier). I don't think life was any better back then, but it surely was more private, you could just go out and do things for your own, and immerse yourself in this other separate uncharted world when you got bored.
The original RM was made within this era, Jun literally gets info on the maidens from a crappy and kinda creepy looking geocities website... like wandering into a dark cave by accident.
I really can't imagine Rozen Maiden being set in anything post smartphones (I shudder imagining after social media), it would just feel so cheapening, don't know how to put it. Not to be too doomeristic but with current writing trends it would be very unlikely it would be treated with subtlety/respect.
