What is /k/'s preferred caliber for general use? If I had to have one rifle cartridge it would probably be 7.62x39 or .308 depending on the day. Pistols are tougher for me, but I think .40 takes the cake over 9mm for the extra stopping power. What about you lads? Any opinions on grains? I actually forgot shotshells until now, but I favor 16 gauge most of the time.

If your wallet can take it, 10mm>.40 S&W. It's versatile as fuck. Light loads give you the same attributes as a .40, hotter stuff gets you up into .357 territory.

The wallet is the problem there. Considering our cruel joke of an economy, I can barely afford my taxes, let alone ammunition.
wrong on all counts. you get whats cheapest and most available, that is most practical. i doubt you'd be able to tell the difference as you're getting shot between 9mm vs .40

20mm like a vulcan minigun
>rifle
.308 because it can be used in a pretty wide variety of guns, so if I see a type of rifle I like then I can usually find a version of it chambered in .308.
>7.62x39 seems almost entirely for AKs/SKSs neither of which I find particularly interesting overall. Though I do own one of each.
>pistol
I don't know how to answer this one, I cc a .357 revolver, shoot squirrels and other vermin with a .380, and target practice with a 9mm. Though I do that last one less often because
>on average $.40+ a round unless you buy multiple thousands of rounds at a time or buy some absolute garbage
I never thought I'd see the day that $.30/rd for 9mm would be considered a good deal. I have money, but not enough to buy enough at once to reap the benefits of bulk purchasing.

Trouble is, even though 9mm is at a higher price now, it is still equal or lesser in price when compared to either .380 or .38 special.

Which is your favorite rifle for .308?

>t is still equal or lesser in price when compared to either .380 or .38 special
Luckily I haven't had to buy any of either of those recently. I got a shitload of .380 a couple years ago and am still slowly burning through it and the various pests who keep fucking with my garden and I rarely shoot .38 special at all since I just shoot .357 out of my cc and the shitty Rock Island .38 I have is ludicrously inaccurate. I regret that purchase.
>Which is your favorite rifle for .308?
I really like my PTR even though it tends to fuck up the brass. Really solid rifle and the magazines aren't expensive at all from what I've seen at gun stores and gun shops. My only complaint is the mag release's location, I want to switch it out at some point.
Replies: >>291
>>286
How is the accuracy on the PTR? Now that Zastava has their new Dragunov looking .308 thing (M71?) there are reports of 1.5MOA with common ball ammo and almost sub MOA with match grade.

I've always read that the G3 clones are closer to 2.5 - 3 MOA, but that could be based on CETME parts kits assembled by John Dumbfuck in his garage for all I know.
Replies: >>292
>>291
Once I got it zeroed I was able to get pretty tight groupings at 100 yards consistently even with the cheapshit ammo I use for target practice and it's solid enough weight-wise that I can magdump and still hit center mass consistently. I want to get an optic for it at some point to see how it holds up with longer distances.
>Now that Zastava has their new Dragunov looking .308 thing (M71?)
You mean the M91?:
https://zastavaarmsusa.com/product/sniper-rifle-m91/
It says it's chambered in 7.62x54r. I looked for m71 but only got the m70 which is just another 7.62x39 AK variant.
Replies: >>294
>>293
It's the M77 I'm retarded. And it's an AK-type receiver not a Dragunov clone. Still people seem impressed by its accuracy, So it's another "battle rifle" competitor at a similar price point.

Oh ok, looks neat I might go for it if I can find one at a store or a gun show, I don't like ordering firearms online. If it makes you feel any better I rarely remember the model numbers for guns unless I actually own them or really want them.
>>277
Not if i'm doing things right, but bass pros offers a mastercard that ive been using on all ammo and firearm accessory purchases lately. They gave me a $4000 limit which is plenty for what I purchase and bonus is you get money back into your account for certain things they want you to buy (bought some longsleeve button ups for winter on sale). Works great because I in driving distance and can always grab cheap range ammo when I need it and pay it off later.
Replies: >>302
>>301
I mean if it works and you're not getting ripped off then you're probably doing it right. The nearest Bass Pro to me is almost 2 hours away, Cabela's is even further. If gas wasn't anywhere from $3.50 to $4+ a gallon I wouldn't mind that trip every couple of weeks.
God help me if my local gun stores start closing down, I'll be relying on gun shows at that point.
Replies: >>306
>>302
The cheapest prices at gun shows near me have been comparable to the ones i've seen in the Bass Pro's chain. The problem is like you said relying on smaller vendors like the smaller gun stores and ammo sellers at gun shows is their shelves empty really quick. The other problem is how to efficiently burning through your ammo in training, or whatever other personalized use of it.

Where are you that gun shows aren't fucking insulting? The last one I went to, Russian steelcase 7.62x39 was a dollar a pop, with signs hung at the tables "ABOUT TO BE BANNED, THANK YOU OBAMA, GET IT NOW WHILE YOU STILL CAN," charmingly scribbled on cardboard with a sharpie and barely readable by a smirking Boomer in a MAGA cap, though I will say the little hammer and sickle in the "O" in "OBAMA" was a classy touch.

Powder was $50+ a pound, primers were $100+/brick, .22 LR was 25+ cents/round when Mini-Mags had been available at every Wal-Mart for $7.79/100 for months. More people were selling, barbecue sauce, cheapass Frost Cutlery fantasy knives, cheap Chinese tasers (ZAP ZAP ZAP), yellowed, mildewed pulp western novels by the milk crate full, 8-track tapes of Boomer music, quilts, old clothes, old tools, beef jerky and Beanie Babies, than firearms or anything related--and half the "gun stuff" dealers were selling airsoft web gear, airsoft "replica" optics and BUIS, for more than the real thing.

I told the attendant I wanted my money back. I didn't pay five bucks to park then eight more for a ticket at the door to walk around a fucking rummage sale with a handful of guns and ammo sprinkled here and there. This was after Trump had taken office, by the way. I haven't been to a gun show since. I doubt they've improved. I will never go to another gun show. Fuck those people and their fucking garage sale trash, and fuck the venues for advertising it as a gun show and charging for both parking and admission.

The last gun show I went to was in winter of 2019 in VA and prices were still pretty reasonable for ammo, though the guns themselves were in short supply with the exception of older stuff (which was all massively overpriced of fucking course).
After the massive cuck rally in January 2020 I haven't even bothered with gun shows at all because ammo prices went through the fucking roof when Northam and the general assembly gave everyone the finger and started ramming through new laws anyway.
They've come down a little since then but last I checked it's still something like ~60 - 75 cents a round for 9mm and I know for a fact most of the retired boomer faggots in the state go to gun shows and buy up all the ammo they can just so they can hoard it.
The funny thing is they're the same kind of nigger that chest thumps about blood and trees and tyrannosauruses only to turn around and cry fed if you even hint at, you know, using the fucking guns against a tyrannical government. They always have blue stripe stickers and suck pig dick every chance they get too. Guess they think it compliments their yellow no step snek license plates.
That turned into a bit of a schizo rant but God fucking damn I hate boomers so much.

In fairness the whole protest was over an assault weapons ban which didn't get passed as a result. The background check bullshit did, however.
I agree with you on the boomer hate. They're useless and don't even care about any other rights except for guns and even then it's only because they have so much money invested. I bet if the government had an optional buyback for 3x the stated value in monopoly money half of them would go for it and then make a million excuses as to why.

best (worst) part is how clueless boomers are as to why everyone hates them. they'll listen to all your 100% correct grievances against them then just stare at you with a smug grin and write you off as a "liberal snowflake". they can't be reasoned with, best course of action is to buy them McDonald's gift cards until they die of heart disease.

Getting back on topic but still related to boomerism, I know of a guy who practices with a ton of .357SIG and .30-06 not because they're practical or affordable, but because some boomer turned prepper in his 70s and then died. His daughters are shitlibs and freaked out when they found a literal pallet of ammunition in the old man's basement and called the sheriff. For some reason they thought having that much ammunition was illegal. The sheriff showed up and basically said, "you're wasting my time; no one gives a shit" but one of the deputies relayed the story to this guy who then bought the ammo from these bitches for pennies on the dollar. It was something like 4,500 rounds of Garand food.

Maybe. The other funny part of the story is they never found any guns in the house. They're probably buried in the back yard, waiting for someone to find them when the new owners decide to plant trees.

To be fair fuddy awcht sicks is perfectly excusable as prepper ammo if you live in an area where there's plenty of big game to hunt.

.40/10mm is a meme, 9mm WILL drop 99% of unarmoured assailants 99% of the time on the first shot, and the second shot will drop the remaining 1% 99% of the time. FBI went with it because the feds are always looking for an excuse to waste taxpayer money. And even they realised the fractionally better performance wasn’t worth the additional cost and heavier recoil which made the second shot harder to hit.
Just go 9mm, or 45ACP if you HAVE to have an imperial bullet.

Thinking about it, 308W really ain’t worth it either. Friendly reminder that the number of law enforcement agencies in the US equipped with rifle-rated plates can be counted on one (1) hand. even if federales or local SWAT boys decide to pay your minecraft dirt shed a visit, 223 WILL crack their pistol-rated plates and put them on the ground, or at the very least incapacitate them for enough time for you to finish them off.

Your bread and butter should be 223/556 and 9mm. Don’t rely on 308/762 for general purpose use, snd don’t rely on meme calibres. Use what the feds use, because you can scavenge off them when they fuck around and find out.

5.56x45 just because it's plentiful in the states, 5.45x39 would be ideal for ballistics and 7.62x39 would be ideal personally. .22LR for handguns because it doesn't take much to kill a man or small game with it, and if you're going to be bugging out it's needed for the former if you don't want to rely on trapping. If you're going to be in the woods dealing with bears and cryptids it's best to have a .357 at least.

I'd get a gun that can handle .45 Super/.450SMC so you get two calibers in one gun, .460 if you have the money.

7.62x39 cause there's no helmet that can withstand it. There are reports of the Russian Spetznaz helmet deflecting an AK round though, so take that as you will.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't most helmets incapable of stopping direct hits from most rifle rounds in general? I was under the impression they were mostly for protection against hitting your head on shit or for stopping rifle butts from shattering your skull in really close quarters situations, or maybe stopping pistol rounds.

There is very little difference between a regular soldier's helmet at a construction hard hat, honestly. Helmets are meant to protect from shrapnel/hard shit falling out of the sky and accidental injury. In combat they aren't gonna do much beyond the Kevlar lining maybe bringing a deadly injury down to a life-threatening injury.

>helmets taking rifle rounds
I think they can at range. There's more than a couple instances of the Taliban hitting some burger in the head with a 8mm mauser round and said burger surviving at extremely long ranges.
I believe the majority Russians helmets are rated by GNOST and usually can take 3-5 hits of 7.62x25 at 5 meters. Some Russian company named ATLAS had a video showing a helmet of theirs taking 7N6M at 5 meters that I can't find.

This is true, but since they are all rounded, they are not very likely to take a direct hit. Materials like kevlar have a weave to them, and the typical behavior of a round that gets "stopped" is that it actually passes through and is then grabbed by the fibers and zipped around your skull, either getting lodged in the helmet somewhere or slung out randomly at a lower velocity. I used to see the occasional random in a chow hall (I was USMC in the 00s) with a bald line going around his head sideways, and that is what that is from.

Insofar as questioning whether to wear one or not, they are generally not that heavy, and so the very real possibility that they can save your life a fair amount of the time sure as shit outweighs not wearing one. I wasn't really liking the lack of detail in the other answers, so I decided to effortpost. I should probably go to bed now.
>>574
This is the epitome of a lack of understanding of why 782 even exists in the first place. Even a skull by itself can skip a rifle round off of it if you are lucky, which is why my small unit was always trained to aim for the fatal T instead. Now, it's hard to fucking see when shit is going down, so you may very well not have that happen (the "regular" soldier in a lot of countries is not all that skilled, to be exact). You would still be absolutely out of your mind not to use 782 unless you are a sniper or special operator who has the ability to actually be invisible. Usually they don't bother with armor when they are set up in a hide somewhere, but they are also so insanely conditioned that they can sustain a life threatening injury and often continue to operate for literally half a fucking week.
>>575
In general, at lower velocities, armor works way better at defeating attacks. Since you cannot predict at what range you may be engaged (in Afghan, the Taliban were notorious for attacking from extreme range for surprise and also to guarantee that they could break contact, although they often used rockets with a range delay fuse because they were more reliable--the source on that is literal former glowniggers because I was never in Afghan personally. The Taliban are honestly one of the best insurgencies of all time.). In general, always hedge your bets and mitigate risks. Unless you have a specific reason not to wear armor (which requires that you know what the fuck you are doing), you will want to pick out a light, medium, or heavy kit. Every piece of your kit will matter and it should all be workable together (because of course you test it). Don't buy into entire categories of gear "not mattering." I had to address that sort of thing because it can and will get people killed, even just that type of thinking will.
