What is your favourite verse or part of the Old Testament?
I like the history of Moses.
Definitely Moses, but I think the early parts of Genesis are all pretty comfy and slightly mysterious in their vibe.
You can't forget Shamgar.

>After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel. (Judges 3:31)

I'm rereading the Bible for the first time in years after rediscovering faith. So far I'm almost done with Deuteronomy and I have to say that I love the Old Testament. I've already read all the gospels.

How do most Christians deal with the Old Testament? For example, Jesus says to turn the cheek instead of "eye for an eye." And yet, the Old Testament says Eye for an Eye. Which is right? If we side with Jesus, then what else do we discard from the Old Testament? I love how the Old Testament is profoundly anti-feminist, but do we also discard this? If we can discard Moses's conception of justice, then why can't we discard everything else he said?
If we don't practice unconditional forgiveness like Jesus, then does that doom us to Hell? If we decide we occasionally want to make like Moses because someone violated us so severely, does that damn us to Hell even though it is in the bible? I feel like there is potentially a major conflict between the Old and New testaments and no one has really delineated the path through, not even Jesus. Plenty of people would depict Jesus as a hippie or liberal softie, and yet Jesus said, "I came not to bring peace, but a sword." He literally references the old world's main symbol of actual violence and killing. Not only that but it was as if Jesus was anticipating his modern audience and said, "you may think I am a liberal pussy, but I am not, I'm actually a Levite."

Thoughts?

The Old Testament is the word of God. Christ's preaching did not repudiate the law but clarify it against the errors of the rabbis. When He preached meekness and non-violence this was always concerned with the Church and how it ought to respond to persecution. When Moses said "an eye for an eye", this was concerned with Caesar's justice, not the Church. Christ was warning against Christian jihad since His kingdom is established by the preaching of His gospel, not the sword. But Caesar too is commanded to repent, and is bound by the law to conform his laws to God's laws. No, you will not go to hell if you fail to obey, if that were the case there would be no hope and we are still in our sins. We stand now before God not on the basis of our own righteousness but the righteousness of Christ, therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Mine would be the story of the young king who lead a crusade against the heathens in Israel, smashing idols, burning temples, etc.

I can never remember his name but he seems like a stand up guy.

>Jesus says to turn the cheek
He meant it as fighting your adversaries with their own means, turning the other cheek meant they had to swing their slap with the inside of the hand which meant they would dirty it along with being seen as too harsh in social view, thus defeating them with their own actions.
It didn't mean "let it be and get slapped again"
as a bald person...
2 Kings 2:23-24
Genesis 1, 2, & 3. Really all the way up to ch 11, actually.

the entirety of Job, it's what got me interested in reading the bible and it certainly feels like an odd one out - no mention of the law of Moses for example
i also like how it deals with the bigger, immediate questions that would come to mind as a newcomer when you think of God
i've heard it's actually the oldest book in the old testament, but i've yet to research this myself

Deuteronomy Chapter 28 is absolutely fundamental

>if thou shalt hearken diligently vnto the voyce of the Lord thy God
>Blessed shalt thou bee in the citie, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
>Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattell, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheepe.

>But it shal come to passe, if thou wilt not hearken vnto the voyce of the Lord thy God
>Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
>Thou shalt betrothe a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.
>The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not, eate vp: and thou shalt be onely oppressed and crushed alway:
>The stranger that is within thee shall get vp aboue thee very high: and thou shalt come downe very low.
>because thou hearkenedst not vnto the voice of the Lord thy God, to keepe his Commandements, and his Statutes which he commanded thee.

I mean this chapter alone sums up the modern west.

>the west becomes athiest between 1910 and 1960
>the west becomes full of muslims and africans and asians shortly after
it is exactly as God says in Deuteronomy. You will build a house and your children will be made homeless. We built a society which foreigners will conquer by birthrates. All because we turned our backs on the Christian religion. It is truly poetic.

proverbs 30
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

i love this verse because its so true, having that capaticitie of saying this and mean it has to be one of the best blessings

All the while the obedient little golems carrying out the ((( usurpers & destroyers ))) wills adamantly cry like stubborn children with fingers stopping up their ears "There is no god, there is no god!111"
Pottery indeed.
Deuteronomy 33: 27 KJV

"The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them."

Anywhere that God speaks, the warnings and calls to return to God from the prophets, the majesty of God's law, the wisdom of the proverbs, the beauty of the psalms

Eye for an eye was a judgement, turning the other cheek was about avoiding petty squabbles and not returning evil for evil. If someone does assault/batter you, you can still press charges and have them held accountable, who knows, maybe they'll find God in prison and maybe that's where God will put them because nothing else would humble them enough to find God. Nebuchadnezzar had to go among the beasts of the field as a beast until he recognized God's Authority and Kingdom.

>All because we turned our backs on the Christian religion
No. It's because we turned our backs on God, and "religion" was largely responsible for it happening.

Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Similarly in Christ's ministry on earth, there were many problems with "religion" then too.

Sadly we have turned from the faith of our fathers
>>20940
This is a very good point!
It amazes me that the Christian faith works and that all the man made sociological "improvements" fail in a major way. It is, I think, proof of the God like Intelligence of our creator who knows how his creation - that would be us, works. And God knew it thousands of years ago and modern sociologists still don't understand it.

This. A Christian anthropology is the only valid, true, and meaningful view of human existence.

Samson
Delilah is such a pure woman. Once again the Bible teaches us the nature of women.
Samson is tortured like Jesus but unlike Jesus God commands Samson to kill them all, and he does.

Judges is always one my favorite books to read when I cycle back through the OT. For some reason it always reminds me of a Mad Max setting.

Yeah, that's a pretty cool way of looking at things Anon. I think the Christian church has been pansified (largely due to unrestrained behavior of women) to the point where they seem somehow to forget it is an awesome and mighty God with Whom we all have to do. His holiness will brook no rivals.
I think most people agree that Exodus is the best part of first testament
