When I was younger, I wanted to make a video game. I got as far as releasing some demos on /agdg/. I never wanted to sell my game, I knew it would be obscure even when free. I save money so that I can do things like making video games. If you are making money by selling video games, you're probably doing something horrible.

Yes in the sense that power laws mean it's very unlikely to earn enough doing either of those things to support yourself. But at least with gamedev there's some potential for real artistry that isn't present with the other options.
