That's what I want to know, There's quite a few anime from early 2000s and early mid 2000s that are 16:9 and there's basically no information on what was the first 16:9 anime other than playground talk.

Not necessarily related to what you were saying, but I think some LotGH movie got a cropped 16:9 release and somebody released a source aspect at some point. Maybe there's something about a theatrical release, expected or guaranteed. I can understand the disdain to some extent. I'd have to look myriad anime up and reevaluate others to determine if these 16:9 complaints matter.
