Japan is not big on religion. Every time a serious religion got in motion there it came with rebellion/upheaval, hunger for power, the use of religion as a vehicle for greed (Christianity especially), and dead people and suffering. They don't mind spiritualism but serious religion (esp. organized religion) and zealotry have been problem children for a long, long time. In Japan the word "religion" itself carries negative connotations, borderline implying scams, cults, secret agendas, cronyism, secret society bullshit, or some other breed of troublemaking. That's why it's so common in Japanese anime and JRPGs for religion to be exposed as a source of corruption and grievous societal harm that needs to be dismantled.
