As none of those were meme worthy and I did not hear about them in the early 2000s I have not seen them and so I cannot give you my opinion on them. k-on is a meme but I skipped it as I didn't like the meme's vibe. When They Cry was just another edgy one that I should have watched but did not. It is from a video game so as with my not liking shows that were first games nor games that were first books, etc, I won't watch it and hate Azure-hair posters and will always hate them. Who even likes mysteries? I'm not watching film noir. How was that even a game and not a book? Parasite Eve gets a free pass as a game btw and so does the show From The New World but this is not on topic so whatever.

I just asked an llm about each of those shows I did not watch. Turns out, unlike Azumanga Daioh, that none of them have a dirty old man character. Interesting when anime that used to get recommended used to be full of off color stuff of which was part of it's appeal. Azumanga Daioh is the only slice of life that I like as it's off color. Fruits Basket might count and naturally the snake guy is a dirty old man. If there's no dirty old man my instincs tell me it's some generation z safe anime without regard to how old it is. I remember before anime sites with comment sections were killed off that people flamed shit that was normal for anime saying Azumanga Daioh was ruined by that teacher when in reality shit like El Hazard's (not slice of life like Fruits Basket as it's in another world, an isaki anime) underage lesbian wanting to fuck a cross dressing MC was what made anime anime at one point in time for the Murikan's that were tired of mundane normalfaggotry in media. El Hazard isn't even unethical or it's teacher wouldn't have gotten stronger while sober nor would he have denied someone in an alternate universe a drink due to her being too young. No drity old man in that but it's got the crazy lesbian loli nymphomaniac. Most slice of life is about as fun as reading a newspaper and the crazyness of things like Osaka is what drives some anime into people's minds. Another is the white dog 'tackling' Chiyo and that cat lover saying 'if you talk to them they'll understand you', that sort of thing zomg crazy thing. I wonder, other than that blue haired cute-hooker mystery solver one, I wonder if any of them are meme worthy... if it had Death Note's style I'd have given it a chance by now, but moe and blue hair? Tisk tisk. I'd got download it anyway but mullvad doesn't allow port forwarding anymore and it was the only non-pozzed VPN so I won't frustrate myself doing that today. Drunk teacher though, spazz character, super smart girlt hat's too young and has orange hair, lesbian nympho getting what she deserves in that anime (opposite side of the coin is the creepy teacher so he sees her as him and rightfully so), it was unironically interesting as it was refreshing and well balannced. Most anime that's got the creepy meme influences are not well balanced and paced like Azumanga Diaoh nor El Hazard.
My point is that I'm burned out at this point so I'll likely never watch those shows and I suspect that they're not 'what I was used to in terms of ususual non-western media' as there'll be 12 year old tier edge such as with the moe-stabber one.
