When I think of surreal anime and shit like that, I think Sentou Yousei Yukikaze or Serial Experiments Lain, I kinda understand the plot of Yukikaze but for Lain I'm at episode 7 and I still don't undestand get it :^).
So why I'm watching something that's a bit hard to understand for me well I like the unique that vibe and feeling they give you, the visual the sounds they always try something unique and they give you this surreal feeling, and especially love Lain because the worlds seems familiar but it isn't everything about is awkward, it's feeled with long scenes with just ambient sounds or characters just staring at each other the same goes for Yukikaze.
I'm not sure how I can explain it but I like these type of anime.

on the surface lain makes little sense, it's one of those 3deep5u things that only makes a little sense at the end. the metaphor of the story however is actually shockingly accurate in a sort of spooky way and I'd go as far as saying it predicted the today's state of affairs.

I don't care too much about the story of lain, I just love it visuals and it's atmosphere, I know many people will criticize the 2deep4u aspect but it's still a great looking show.

Yeah, surreal elements are intriguing. I like when they get used. For Lain it's central. The anime is a piece of art more than a stringent story that is being told. I honestly can't tell if I (at one point) understood it or didn't. I think I did the second time I watched but forgot. But then again much of is more or less up to interpretation.
Of course other series at least include surreal elements, like Madoka or the last few episodes of Evangelion, I liked them there as well.

Evangelion had some cool looking scene with surreal elements but it tried to hamfist the story a bit too much, with character's always talking about something mysterious and shit like that but just like I said with Yukikaze and Lain they were subtle, most of the characters don't talk all the time they are many scenes of silence, heck most of the Dogfighting scenes in Yukikaze are pretty silent you only the ambient sound of the jetfighter.

I need to watch this again. There are some obvious themes the show explores but I feel like I missed some.

Tried Lain and while I could appreciate the visuals and artistic direction I couldn't get invested in the story at all. Lain wasn't really likeable or interesting at all, it was like watching an emotionless robot autist struggle to interact with humans. Maybe one day I'll give it another go.

yeah it is a bit overrated

Lain is cute, would cuddle.

Could you relate to her?

bh I don't want a perfectly made story where nothing upsets me. It's a show where everything has a funny angle and has that air of mystery (well it kinda has that since it's a melodrama, what can I say). It's kinda like Parasyte in a way, you want to know what's gonna happen next, but you can't tell for sure. So yeah I'm curious about the storyline and who it's about. I can tell you this, I'm gonna start watching Hana Yori Dango soon! Hopefully it won't be as disappointing!
This imagines a futuristic dystopia where everyone was given the power of "redo" - the ability to rewind time and possess their own younger bodies in the past at any time (through magic or technology, doesn't matter).

The world is split between those who refuse to "redo", those who are addicted to "redoing", and those who try to "redo" only under the correct circumstances.

Imagine a world where at any time you or someone you know could be possessed by a version of themselves from some future you will never get to actually experience, people behave erratically as they undergo extreme shifts in personality and behavior seemingly at random, the series would focus on the effects this kind of thing would have upon the greater society.

For one thing, history has been completely lost, nobody even knows what year it is, as people have been "redoing" since forever.

The widespread power of "redo" is shown both positively and negatively, it acknowledges the good and bad of this world, some stories are heartwarmingly wholesome, others are grim scenarios for anyone who knows the truth, etc.

"Redo" is explored as a concept, not just for practical consequences but also psychological effects on people and the greater philosophical crisis that occurs in a world where one's mistakes could always simply be undone.

The story would follow five people whose stories intersect the central character being a thoughtful introspective sort or adamantly refuses to ever "redo" as he seeks existential purpose.

Gonna steal this for my anime series and never give credit. Thanks, sucker!

Kino no Tabi also has that depressive philosophical feeling like lain.

A recent title (2020s) that I remember as being a bit divisive when it first aired was Wonder Egg Priority. Not my favorite, but it probably deserves a mention as far as surreal anime series are concerned.

Haibane Renmei is a good one.

Dead Leaves is the Gainax film that has a guy with a TV head but isn't FLCL, right? That was a decent movie. That scene where the two main characters fuck in prison and an inmate gets horny and sodomizes another inmate with a penis drill was funny.
Dr. Irabu's Office is another I just remembered. Don't really recommend it. There are scenes with 3DPD.

Mononoke is kinda surreal? Has a unique art style and is about ghosts, at least.

Kemonozume is odd. I think it's animated by the same people who did Mind Game? It looks similarly weird.

Gantz is trippy. Basically some strange being photocopies people that just died and forces them to hunt other strange beings, freeing them from servitude when they successfully complete 100 jobs or something.

Gungrave is a bit weird. Like half the series is very grounded, straightforward mafia stuff and then it goes full sci-fi. That's a show I wish stayed grounded to be honest. Really wish there was a good mafia anime (maybe there is and I just don't know, but 91 Days certainly isn't it).

Don't know the cut-off, but Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a bit surrealistic with the "town loses their shit" parts. Would RE:Zero be considered surreal since the protagonist is always witnessing his friends be brutally murdered before time resets?
King of Thorn is a weird movie, too.
Dorohedoro also exists, but I personally think it's extremely bad. It has a lot of CGI.

The manga is better.

it also goes well beyond where the anime ends, which looks terrible and does a major disservice to the beautiful manga art imo
Paprika is a good, trippy anime movie for whoever asked. King of Thorn, too.

Mawaru Penguindrum is a bit nutty too, I guess.
