The first one probably would have sounded fine (if muddy as hell) on real hardware of the time, with a fat paper-cone speaker and closed metal case acting as low pass filters. Most of these youtube videos are done with DOSBox, which is infamously terrible for stuff like this because it has nothing resembling cycle timing and getting anything more than bleeps out of the PC speaker is speed dependent.
