Nowadays phones are good enough to last for more than a decade, they are way stronger than a lot of old PCs and sometimes even modern ones.
Realistically, for office work, anything well designed with 4-8GB of a RAM and a dual core can use some kind of Office, send mails, make video calls, etc. Enough for 90% of the boring stuff we've been doing since last decade. Hardware wise I could still use my old Samsung Galaxies and iPhones, even without Spotify or Netflix you can listen to mp3 and watch mp4.
The problems to fix to make an "immortal" phone are the batteries, screens and OS.
Batteries always have a shorter lifecycle than the rest of the device and screens and sometimes go fat.
And screens are the default way to input and output anything, even if docking a dead phone you need to check some stuff on the screen and touch it.
OS to sideload stuff and remove the corpo trash that locks you.
I really wished some Chinese crazy company that make these crazy gadgets would create a phone with no boot restrictions, a magnetic interchangeable screen, removable battery and USB video output, all with open patents. It's sad that we have this tech but it's never implemented together.
