Such statement being an abhorrent falsehood, yet it has taken hold, I believe, because it was given entrances under the guise of its insidious twin: people deserve recognition for the merit of their ancestors. Which I recon has been much more widely accepted for much longer, yet it has open the door to the travesties of justice we witness today (slavery reparations, affirmative action, racial guilt, etc).
Because logically, if you claim superiority for actions taken by those you share a bloodline with, you are also opening the door for sharing the blame for their misdeeds. And, human nature being what it is, there's a lot more wicked acts than honorable deeds in any bloodline.
Therefore the solution is to not participate of such stupidity, living by our merits, and emphatically denounce the folly of anyone claiming greatness for actions they didn't partake in as well as anyone blaming others for actions they didn't commit either.
