Good luck with that.
I think you'll find that the short answer is simply that a vast portion of the population merely feel the need to fill the silence with something, anything to keep the existential dread of their own thoughts, undistracted, from having sole focus in their minds.
I have also watched family members stare in glazed-eye torpor as the flickering light of the "magic screen" washes over them. It doesn't matter if it's TeeVee or a smaller screen with greater interactive ability; what you need to be aware of is that mass cognitive manipulation has been studied and perfected since the 40s, via the Tavistock Institution and MKU.
This means that generations, starting with the Baby Boomers, have been programmed in Skinner-box style, to respond to a screen as a willing participant in a sort of hypnotic induction that bypasses actual experiences and critical thinking by utilizing primates' mirror neurons as if what they are watching is actually happening to them on a subconscious level.
Add to that the substitution of primal drives of sex and hunger to consooomer products, and you have a volatile mix of addictive and engaging programming which serves to reinforce a surface level awareness of existence as well as providing relief from having to confront their actual lives, which if looked at critically and deeply, would be recognized as empty and a SCAM to make people PAY for the mere fact of living.
