It's a common "care injury" of sorts. The modus operandi of autism care/schooling etc revolves around changing the environment to suit the (autistic) individual. Doesn't really work well outside of the environment itself (the rest of the "adult" world, etc).
It shouldn't be surprising that he adapts to it and starts "presenting himself in a way that will get people to take care of him". It could be said that if it wasn't in such an environment, he might not act like that, but that's not guaranteed, and he couldve ended up with other problems.
