Romans used to use urine as mouthwash and as part of toothpaste, and it's been used until the 1700s. The reason being that it worked.

You can make some pretty decent ammonia-based cleaning materials out of urine, and it's widely available, so they used it for all kinds of cleaning, including laundry, though I'm sure they put some kind of processing to it.
