By the word of the lawman himself,
>Regarding meta threads: you shouldn't post in this one since I rarely read /meta/ as it's really meant for bugs, improvements and other shit Sturgeon is meant to take care of, not board meta. Meta threads on /v/ aren't and were never meant to be banned or taboo, anyone is free to make one at any time if there isn't one already as long as the issue at hand is of greater calamity than (nothing important)

Ergo, we will be moving here.

Current discussions:
1.Please move the bump limit. By the time a thread hits page 11 its already a month old which means there's literally no difference between rule 4 before you changed it and now.

2.Why do the two mods here have such different views on moderation? You can get banned or have your reports dismissed depending on who sees them. Make the rules solid.

3.My penis is hard.

USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST vulgar display in public

FIRST TO SAY NIGGER
Agree fully with discussion 1. I would make the limit page 6 + bumplock before a new thread can be made.
I also think ideally meta threads should be on a different board so they don't attract dramafaggotry to the main board.

As was said in the /meta/ thread, seagull, off-board meta discussion only exists so jannies can move criticism of themselves where the board won't see it. This happened on /q/, /qa/, /ameta/, /vmeta/, /meta/, /operate/, and so on. This means the only way to get janny's attention for real is to do something retarded like wipe the catalog which will have massive collateral damage.
Of course the flip side is that meta threads are by nature a massive target for gayops, but what's the alternative?
>>45367
the alternative is banning people like you for shitting up the board

Then I'm reposting this shit from /meta/ for all to see. Even though this thread will probably be filled with shitposting and locked.

---

Threads get bumplocked and then get stuck in the middle of the catalog for many weeks, wasting a big chunk of potential discussion because people don't see new posts and thus won't reply. And don't give me this "just go down the catalog" shit, if you think about it for 7 and a half seconds, you'll realize that there's no way for people to know when someone posts something on that thread without either specifically checking that thread over and over and over just in case someone posted or by memorizing every thread's post number. Nobody wants to do that shit, that's why thread bumping was invented in the first place.

>but muh catalog will fill with repeated threads
So fucking what. You're basically using problems with the IB software and moderation inconvenience and ancient months old threads (that would be replaced by the new thread) as reasons to reduce board activity. Nobody cares if a thread at the back of the catalog that nobody has replied to in 3 months gets deleted in favor of a new thread about a topic that was popular enough to reach bump limit. The difference between a bump limit and post limit right now is 50 posts, if you removed that (or allowed new threads immediately at bump limit) then the only reason the board would "fill up with threads" any more than currently is because people would actually notice discussions and participate in them properly instead of having threads rot at the back of the woods somewhere. In "slow" boards like this, it is completely viable to use the board by refreshing the index page and never go to the catalog, I've heard numerous times that people browse boards that way, and I do it sometimes too because I want to join active discussions that happen where ever they happen to happen.

This is, in my opinion, one of the foremost mistakes that imageboards make. I recall in 8chan the activity in /agdg/ always plummeted as soon as the thread got bumplocked, what exactly is the benefit of this? Assume there's no problems with the catalog filling up or whatever, why would you argue in favor of this? You fucking wouldn't.

The idea of abandoning old threads is fine since you get a new OP which helps the topic feel fresh, but the only thing bump limits accomplish is making discussion harder for others see. In an ideal world the transition to a new thread should be instant, seamless, and the current thread would never stop being bumped.

>what is the point of a bumplock?
There is none, it's a leftover from 4chan which has had it since time immemorial and nobody ever bothered to think about it since. Bumplocking and bump limits function as a replacement to having pages on the thread like normal forums do, you need one or the other or else the thread bloats until it lags up your browser. Bumplocking itself works as a soft-lock, you can phase out the thread without abruptly locking it entirely, so people have time to migrate and post links to the new thread and don't necessarily have to reply to people across threads.

The primary problem with bumplocking however is as mentioned; there's a time period where nobody outside of the thread can see when a new post appears, and thus won't respond to any discussion or questions until the original poster has most likely already left the thread. This was never a problem in 4chan since it's so fast that threads get deleted shortly after bumplocking, but it becomes a problem in slower imageboards like these where threads get stuck in the middle of the catalog for literally weeks or even months.

To be clear I don't think bump limit itself is the problem, the problem is the rule that you can't create a new thread until some arbitrary extra milestone has been reached on top of the bump limit.
>>45372
That's also compounded with the slower pace of these boards compared to what was on 4chan back in the day. Making a new thread ends up like stepping on eggshells because some dumb rulenigger will drive-by sage and shitpost unless you follow said practice to the letter.
Replies: >>45401
Also a related but separate note on new thread creation:

>I think it's fine for a thread that hasn't been replied to in 2 months to be dropped from the catalog.
<But why drop threads at all when you can hold more?
>Because I think it's much easier to start a fresh discussion by making a new thread than it is by pulling up a stagnant year old thread from the bottom of the catalog and making a 376th reply to it.

If jschan had the feature, I would set threads to be locked or bumplocked if there hasn't been activity in 1-2 months or so. People are much more likely to check a new thread than a very old one that got bumped, it would foster more discussion if you were allowed to make a new thread than being forced to use a very old thread that's effectively already died.
Can you make a no niggers allowed, rule?

>and other shit Sturgeon is meant to take care of

>>45372
>>45374
Also there's no watchlist which means you can't quickly pull it up to see what threads have had replies. To be fair I think that's the board's software and not something that can be solved without a feature request.
>>45368
fuck off shitting up the board is sacrosanct it's not a subreddit
>>45372
I generally agree with this. We can talk all day about how people SHOULD continue posting in bumplocked threads, and how they SHOULD look through the whole catalog, but the fact is they just don't. If a topic is popular enough that people want to make another thread about it, I see little reason not to let them.

This is also something I want answered. I don't expect every shitpost to be cleaned up but the stuff I report is usually either outright retardation or one step removed from spam. If a spambot was posting "kill all liberals and impotent leftists" it'd be deleted immediately but because some BR nigger is autistic enough to do it himself, he somehow gets a pass?

I mentioned this on /meta/ several months ago and the response from pasta was that the "alleged Luciano" was the same as any other poster, so he got to stay. I'm genuinely startled that anyone could have used old 8chan/v/ and not noticed Luciano enough to be able to identify him.

Anything that guy would show whoever he was replying to would just be dismissed out of case as an anecdote or "not good enough" because this isn't the kind of thing that can be measured accurately.

I'll try to be constructive here.

The issue regarding the bump/post limit seems to be based on how people interact with the board and how they want conversation to flow. One camp, as mentioned in >>45372, uses the index to browse the board and wants to reply to active discussion wherever it happens to be, regardless of what thread it's in. Let's call it "discussion-focused posting." That is, a user posts where the active discussion is because he finds that the most stimulating and enjoys getting replies quickly. He is not necessarily interested in making posts that will not engender some kind of discussion or activity, although that does not mean he never does it.

The other camp (and there are likely more than two camps) prefers using the catalogue and finding threads to post in that way. This type of user is more likely to read (most of) an entire thread before making a post, or at least reading more than what he would see if he were viewing a thread on the index. Let's call this type of posting "topic-focused posting." That is, a user posts in threads or about topics he finds interesting and doesn't care too much if he gets a reply quickly. Making the post and thinking about the topic is stimulating enough regardless of how many people actually read or care about what he has to say - although I'm sure he prefers getting replies and having the conversation continue just as much as everyone else.

To the discussion-focused posters, the catalogue may as well not exist past the first handful of pages. If a discussion isn't active, then it logically stands that the topic reached its natural conclusion. If people wanted to talk about it, they'd be talking about it, wouldn't they? I do understand that point of view, but it does have more than a little in common with the speed-addicted posting you'd find on places like cuckchan or social media, where a topic being older than 48 hours is grounds not only for dismissing it, but actively ridiculing it. It also weights visibility (which is a limited resource because only so many threads can fit on the index) in favour of threads that have high activity, for better or worse. A handful of shitposts would outweight a single good post in this system by bumping the shitposting thread to the top. This problem is exacerbated because only the first page of the index is visible without the user manually browsing to the next. If you vehemently dislike shitposting of any kind, this is a big problem with the index view.

To the topic-focused posters, the index is a bizarre relic from a bygone time: if a user is connecting via dial-up, then loading a 200-post thread would take a long time. Doing so only to see a couple new posts (which may not have been very interesting in the first place) could be a colossal waste of bandwidth and time. But these days everyone has fast internet connections that can load large pages of basic HTML and media files quickly. Therefore, there is nothing preventing people from using the catalogue to find threads they find interesting and manually reading through them. The catalogue is also weighted in favour of high-traffic posting and shitposting, but this is somewhat mitigated because the catalogue shows every thread on the board if you scroll down and because you don't get to see the content of a post until you open the thread. There's no cliff's notes version that you see in the index.

Personally, I prefer using the catalogue and I think having 3-5 tabs open in a web browser is a small price to pay for monitoring activity on a board. I follow threads because I'm interested in the topic more than the speed of replies. Obviously active discussion is better, but I don't consider it to be more important than the topic actually being discussed.

If we wanted to harmonize these viewpoints regarding the bump/post limit on threads, I think there are some ways we could do so.
>Make the bump limit and the reply limit the same.
This means that an active discussion that reaches the bump limit would be forced to continue in a new thread, although it would no doubt be jarring to people in the thread who weren't paying close attention to the number of posts. I think this will likely lead to more than a few lost posts when several people try to post at once in a thread with one reply left. A discussion that is winding down would also be forced to go elsewhere, and may not justify making a new thread just to have people replying to posts in the old ones before the conversation naturally ends.
>Make the difference between the bump limit and the reply limit smaller; say, 20 posts instead of the current 50.
This would give people enough time to realize the thread was no longer bubbling to the top of the catalogue, but allow the end of a discussion to wind down organically. Remember, a bumplocked thread is still visible on the index until it slides off. If scrolling down to the bottom of the index's first page is too much to ask, then you're too dumb to be on the internet.
>Tell people to post in older threads and be more proactive about bumping threads they like by making good posts.
This is the common practice on other slow boards like /tg/, and has worked well for them. However, it also requires everyone on the board to have roughly the same disposition and an IQ greater than 110, so it may not be a good fit for /v/.
>Invent some new solution like we did with the captchas.
We've seen tried-and-true solutions not be good fits for the modern internet experience, especially with the old format of an image board. I don't think this is necessarily a bad idea, but it may be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I knew this was retarded. Imagine arguing (And I use that term loosely) against someone only to advocate for the same things they do.
I mean you did make a feeble attempt to justify some solutions as better by making a enormous post about why the way you use the board is better and marks you as a oldfag, and this:

>although it would no doubt be jarring to people in the thread who weren't paying close attention to the number of posts
>I think this will likely lead to more than a few lost posts when several people try to post at once in a thread with one reply left
Which are minor problems. Nitpicking.
I can't possibly imagine someone being such a massive waste of time and not realizing why someone would want to talk with someone who's actually important instead of you.

The only bumplocked threads in the catalog that don't have a new thread are
MMO - past page 11 so you can make a new thread
SS13 - last post 4/2
Fightan - last post 4/3
/agdg/ - last post 4/6
Emulation - last post 4/6

Where is this mythical thread that you can't post in because nobody will reply?
>>46452
Sorry MMO does have a new thread already, I missed it. So that's 4 threads that you are afraid to post in because they are bumplocked, and all have had posts in the last week.
>>46448
My guess is it's a holdover from imageboard use on fast boards from before the catalog was a thing, when only threads on the first few pages had any posts. I myself don't see the value of the catalog except for maybe going to find an old thread I was interested in following that happens to be bumplocked.
Replies: >>46455
>>46454
It's funny because back in the day anons would just have a bunch of windows/tabs open for the threads they were following, which made refreshing the front page irrelevant. Some enterprising anons had more creative tracking methods but that's what the average smoothbrain did.

Most of what you've listed are threads that very recently became bumplocked. The MMO thread didn't receive any posts for weeks until I went out of my way to defy the currently in place rules to make a new thread long before it got to where it was now. You're just wrong that bumplocked threads continue to see activity beyond hitting their bumplocked state. Sure it might take a week for the activity to fall off, but it inevitably does and there's no justification for killing thread activity like that. You're an idiot.

Yes, you figured it out. The reason this retarded rule isn't as bad in practice is because it's broken constantly and not even the moderation gives a shit. At least 4 active recurring threads broke this rule, but surely more since some bumplocked threads died since they were made and you can't tell.
The rule goes against the nature of how anons post, but no matter how much practical evidence there is against it, the "ACKSHUALLY" type posters who defend this rule don't care and will endlessly parrot this pipe dream of how everyone should post, and no one will ever follow it.

That's not a problem. >Board ruined
I wouldn't say /v/ is ruined, but sturgeon's laissez-faire approach has effectively killed /b/. As of now, the board has been nothing but some mouthbreather on his epic crusade to call out every post with an animu grill with >pedo and >trannime and attaching Youtube memes to his posts. To make matters worse, faggots have been replying to him so he now has the incentive to make people mad until mommy says it's bedtime, because the board goes silent from 20:00 UTC onwards. He has admitted to only lurking from Zchan onwards, the absolute newfag.

Had no idea such a beast exists. Usually jewtube users perpetuate memes created elsewhere, usually cuckchan; there are channels that go as far as posting screencaps from there and reading them out loud in the video. And earn money from this.

Given mods are most likely to read this thread than >>>/meta/, I was wondering why browsing in TOR defaults to the clearnet website even when I'm using the TOR url. In case it's happening to everyone here, please fix it.

Sturgeon is aware and either trying to fix it or can't. Bug reports should be done on meta, fish reads it even if bird doesn't.

Not reacting doesn't work when the goal isn't to harvest replies but to flood the front page with shit and/or take lots of screenshots of your replies to yourself for the next fake mass shooting. Bans don't work because any dedicated shitposter is using Tor or changing its IP every 30 seconds anyway. The only things that slow down gayoppers/glowniggers like /cattle/ are chess and the mods F5ing like madmen to janny every single one of their shitty bait posts the millisecond they appear.

So if a moderator deletes a one liner thread OP with soyjaks in it, then the tvch goon spergs out and people say it was warranted, do you get to refute that by declaring "you guys are the same as cakeniggers defending cakekike"? When mods do stupid shit I call them stupid, when mods do fine shit and there's a blatant cabal of you julay teenagers trying to stir shit I'll speak up too.

I have a folder filled with literally hundreds of instances of cakekike acting maliciously. I've yet to see anyone actually provide evidence of the mods here doing things that are indefensibly stupid or weren't quickly remedied.

You not being able to effectively form an argument does not mean everyone else is being blindly loyal to internet janitors, it just means you're an idiot.

Goons are attracted to any and all drama.

Goons and SJWs are just another form of the moral crusader. They are constantly on the lookout for anything they can use to elevate themselves within their social circles, and that means attacking even harmless people who just want to be left alone.
OP made a shitty 1-line question thread related to some webm. Normally I would delete or lock the thread but after so many complaints of me "deleting anything he doesn't like" I moved it to the webm thread instead.

Didn't really gave in to anyone as I'm still deleting cuckchan threads. The only reason that one wasn't nuked was because it was still somewhat salvageable. It was bad not due to wojaks or other crap, it was bad because it was an effortless 1-line question. If we didn't have a webm or QTDDTOT thread it would get deleted.

If you want to be convinced, I literally told him to move those posts over to the WEBM thread.
If he hadn't received any reports, he would have done nothing. Too bad I exist.

If you were ever an ib mod or janny you’d know a lot of shit gets reported, usually stuff that isnt even breaking any rules whatsoever. To act on those would be the mark of a spineless moderator who needs to be lead rather than to lead himself.

CosA + CosB = 2 * Cos(A+B*0.5) * Cos(A-B*0.5)
if SinA and CosA assume the same A, then 90-X will give you that.
If you already have "number", then you could just look at a radian circle diagram.
For example, Cos(x) = Cos(180 - x) and so on.

Is ‘cuckchan quality’ clearly defined or listed out in examples exhaustively? Don’t think so. If you want to start making arbitrary rules about what ‘kind’ of thread is or isnt allowed then you’ll need to improve the verbiage of the existing rules, make more rules, or list examples of what you dont want to see.
>>50913
you can look at the thread yourself, it's quintessentially cuckchan, may as well have a wojak for the op
