General thread for video game footage editing and streaming.
Ask questions, give advice, and share live streams ITT. Read the software list below first (all FOSS).

>Video editors
- Shotcut: A great video editor with various effects and filters, suitable for beginners and pros alike. https://shotcut.org
- Kdenlive: Buggy video editor by the KDE guys. https://kdenlive.org
- Blender Video Editor: Part of Blender and utilizes its node system. Like Blender itself, a pain in the ass to use but supposedly powerful. https://www.blender.org

>Video recorders
- OBS: Record and/or stream anything on your screen, optimized for vidya. https://obsproject.com

>Miscellaneous
- Subtitle Composer: Easily write subtitles for videos. https://subtitlecomposer.kde.org
- Remove.BG: Online tool to remove the background of a photo using AI. https://www.remove.bg

>Command line tools
- ffmpeg: Swiss army knife of video manipulation, convert and trim videos among other features. Can record video and audio too but limited in that area. https://ffmpeg.org
- webm.py: Python wrapper script for ffmpeg, lets you quickly make WEBMs within a specified file size. https://github.com/Kagami/webm.py
- Nadeshiko: Another wrapper for ffmpeg with a focus on optimization. Linux only. https://codeberg.org/deterenkelt/Nadeshiko
- yt-dlp: Download videos from YouTube and other audio/video streaming platforms. Successor to youtube-dl. https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp
- Streamlink: Pull streams from any website to watch with minimal latency. https://streamlink.github.io

>Video sharing/streaming platforms
- PeerTube: Decentralized video sharing platform, supports live streaming now with lower latency. Per-instance CoC. https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list
- Odysee: Centralized video sharing platform, paywalled live streaming. Global CoC. https://odysee.com
- Cytube: What streamfags use, queue external (YouTube/PeerTube) video streams while viewers chat anonymously. https://cytu.be

how's going bros it's peeeeeeeewdiepie
exactly 2 months after, I finally hit double digit followers and broke a few of my previous records
>49 live views (previous was 45)
>33 unique viewers (previous was 27)
>7 concurrent viewers (previous was 6)
>52 vod views (previous was 47)
I also noticed that I generally get more views on my vods, I used to average ~10 views each while now it's more or less double that amount, not sure whether it's just because I streamed a more popular game or because the algorithm is playing nice or whatever else.
some of the more recent followers did return a couple times for a few fleeting minutes, but my #1 fan, the guy who donated, always shows up right on time. bonus: I scored a furry follower who also streams complete with a furry facerig and reads gross fanfiction.
I'm now planning to expand and start uploading my vods to youtube because I think there were at least a few moderately valuable moments here and there which one day I may want to clip and put together into a best of epic montage XD for the ADHD crowd. I also made a twitter account around 3 weeks ago but I have yet to use it at all.

we're all gonna make it streambros.

Shotcut has this color thing that shows the color information of the current frame. Is there something like this but for the whole video, like the audio wave that shows in the timeline?

Not as one image for the whole video, but as a line under the video, like the audio wave showing the volume at each point.

looks like some generic canid of some sort maybe a wolf or fox with white and black fur
and does he read it live on stream?
not only did he read it live for his <amount> subscribers special, he was also the one who had written it in the first place. I gotta admit it seemed like it was actually decently written, it had a few moments that legit made me chuckle, though I didn't watch it to the end because it was getting too saucy, and therefore cringy

ive noticed alot of channels i watch on youtube (yes youtube!) use shadowplay. I wonder what settings they use. Do they just upload bloated filesizes or do they encode shit?
Replies: >>183638
>>183637
Shadowplay is pretty easy to setup but you don't have alot of control you can change the file type and bitrate and that's pretty much it.
It's capturing made for retards but I remember that it doesn't take alot of computing power but I'm pretty sure that OBS is now alot more efficient.

It's just GPU encoding. It's complete trash for everything except live recording.

OBS doesn't by default. Unless you switched encoders in Settings > Output it should be set x264 CPU encoding. You might even have to switch it to Advanced mode to be able to switch.

GPU encoding is shit in general, the difference is shadowplay gets shilled by Nvidia and AMD doesn't shill their equivalent because everyone is already standardized on NVENC. Unless you're playing bloated modern vidya on marginal hardware, have no extra space or actually have a toaster running CPU encode on bloated settings in OBS and then crunching it down with ffmpeg overnight is the patrician's solution.

OBS is really fucking good for file sizes and quality. It never used to work for me but suddenly works now.
Im wondering if i should use NVENC or x264? NVENC works fine but i read thats the gpu? Or are they pretty similar? Because i want the best possible thing

Term's older than you, probably.
I'll even spoonfeed your ass since you're apparently incapable of understanding a term that pretty much explains itself: it's freeware software that nags at you to buy it. One famous example is winrar.
That said it doesn't apply to a demo, it by definition has to be full fledged software that has no restrictions other than the nagging. And literally every single demo in steam's nextfest is going to ask you to wishlist the game, so it might as well have been the free space.

streamerbros... I don't feel so good. it's been nearly 2 more months and almost nothing has changed, I had gotten up to 14 followers at the end of january and had gained another regular who would come in literally every single stream and hang out from start to finish and everything was looking good, then, the first regular, the one who donated back in december went mia and 2 of the followers unfollowed setting me back to 12 again. I played some more popular games in the meantime hoping to catch the thunder I'd gotten with my most successful stream but to no avail, matter of fact the past month has been more dead than my first and I got z e r o followers, pitiful live views and my vod views are back to 10 or less views each. and I reached rock bottom with last friday's stream which got 3 live views, 1 from the regular and 2 from the data harvesting bots that always show up. a significant step back, overall.

I started using my twitter profile more regularly hoping to draw in someone by advertising when my streams start and posting funy meme in hope to draw someone in but it hasn't worked so far though my tweets do get a few views. if anything this is giving me some insight about twitter: it is a garbage platform, but a useful one at that if you know how to mess with it. like I posted a tweet mentioning a way bigger handle and guess what, now my tweet suddenly has 400+ views and whatever. it's definitely an avenue of potential viewers for twitch, since there really isn't any way at all to advertise on the latter.

to conclude, I don't know about this whole streamer thing anymore. I thought at some point I'd gotten the ball rolling and it'd snowball from there but it's now dead in its tracks again and this is kinda making me lose motivation. I think I'll give it 2 more months and if it doesn't pick up again I'll quit since if I can't grow at all in 6 months it's a blatant ngmi situation.

From what I see on your jewtube, you've only been playing steam indieshit.
If you really want to become a shitty streamer you have to play the biggest AAA new titles.
You also can't just copy vinny's format. He was lucky by starting early.
If you want a slimmer of a chance you have to become full on corporate. (Suscribers names appearing on screen, exciting click-baity titles, faked over the top reactions, etc.)

wait, I think the issue is on my end.
When I opened this thread of my phone, both webms sounded the same. Now that I look at it closer, my raw output is in mp4 while the end product is webm. Maybe there was something lost in translation, something Brave mobile picks up, but my MPC and Waterfox do not.

whats up streamerbros it's me again, peeeeeeewdiepie your favorite streamerbro of bros, here with a renewed enthusiasm because I might've made a breakthrough of sorts.
first of all, one of my loyal simps who has not missed a single stream, got fed up with me refusing to make a youtube channel and upload my vods because I deemed it a waste of time and didn't want to surrender my phone to youtube, and guess what? the fucker went and did it himself. he set up a channel using his own phone number and he's been downloading and reuploading my fucking vods himself since. he even made a quick low effort trailer for the channel. he literally put more effort than I did lol. as for the twitter I figured out a way to get more exposure and guess what, I got 6 new followers in literally less than a week, setting me at 7, which is 5 short of how many I got on twitch but gained in 1/10th of the time. twitter is a definitely a good way to advertise your whatever and get a tonne of easy exposure to a huge audience with very little effort, exposure you would not get anywhere else, matter of fact, I think if I keep at it and exploit it properly it might become my main source of newcomers. with that in mind, I'm still pulling more or less the same numbers on twitch and I haven't gotten any new followers in almost a month, but tweets are getting a few views here and there and announcing+linking my streams over and over is bound to draw someone who sticks around eventually. also the same simp was considering donating a capture card so I could stream console games since my machine can't emulate and stream at the same time. in a nutshell the situation is largely the same but some new foundation to improve upon was laid and it might bear start bearing fruits in the near future.

that's it for this post, remember to like and subscribe and click the bell for notifications so you don't miss any more posts of mine. *brofist*

I know. That's why I recommended it.
Since everyone else recommended Prey (and it certainly is a good game), I'll have to recommend Singularity next after Prey. It's a really fun game and the last true Raven game before it got turned into a COD zombie studio. It's a pretty fun game where you play as a special forces soldier sent to investigate an old Soviet research station, and then that devolves into fucking up the timeline and fighting off a Soviet World Empire. It's really fun, you should definitely play it.

YO YO YOOOOOOO streambros! it's me again, PEEEEEEEEEEWDIEPIEEEEEEEE *brofists your asshole through the screen* and I'm back again with a report of my epic streamerbro adventures. first of all, I can finally confirm twitter is worth it I've gained at least 2 extra followers on twitch while I wasn't even streaming because of it, and I'm now at 14, which is fucked because I have over 4 times that amount on twitter, yes yo heard right I have over 56 followers on twitter in barely 1 month of actively using it. twitter is essentially free super ez advertising which barely takes any time investment or effort from your part, since you can just type some bullshit, post a pretty pic and use some tactical hashtags and the algorithm will work its magic. collaterally it can also be used for lulz, since it appears you can type whatever word diarrhea and using the right hashtags many will come across it and either A get mad or B agree regardless of what you say. I'm surprised to say it has potential if used the right way.

second, my new simp felt stupid+generous and donated 30 buckeroos which adds up to 55 bucks of tax free money I swindled out of retarded twitch goers by playing video games and talking into a mic lol.

how goes it with you streamerbros? remember to smash that follow button

quick and dirty highlight
Due to some scheduling conflicts, I will be doing this weeks VNS stream on Friday at the usual time of 1 PM Pacific/4 PM Eastern

Stream is live: https://8chan.tv/view/f664ceb8-3b9d-480b-bcdf-c95f1711043a/
Show will be starting in about 25 minutes.
I recorded a Synthetik 2 run and took the opportunity to try out Odysee:
https://odysee.com/@ContextCracking:e/Synthetik2EAG1.1
They bitched about it not being mp4 but from what I can tell the quality and loading seems just fine with Webm, as it should be.
>>198463
They use a simple html5 video tag for playback so I don't know why they would complain about that.
Replies: >>198474
>>198470
I have no idea either but they did present me a warning that I should use mp4 with AAC for some reason. Guess I can just ignore that and chalk it up to alt-tech jank. Or maybe it makes a difference when streaming, who knows.

H.264 + AAC is the standard codec pair for online video because it's supported by all browsers, meanwhile VP9 + OGG is not supported by Apple browsers which is why you got a warning. I wouldn't worry about it at all if I were you.
By the way you might wanna read a little about the difference between a container format (mp4, webm) and a codec (h.264, aac, vp9, ogg). An mp4 file can contain many codecs, same for webm, which is why specifying the codecs is important.
Replies: >>198534 >>198539
>>198512
Good to know, I think I can even reduce the crf in ffmpeg because the video ended up being larger in webm than in the original mkv format which shouldn't happen.

>>198523
>meanwhile VP9 + OGG is not supported by Apple browsers which is why you got a warning
Good to know, I'll just ignore that because who cares about Apple Users
>By the way you might wanna read a little about the difference between a container format
I am familiar with the distinction, I just use them interchangably sometimes when either the container or codec reasonably implies the other
>>198523
Ogg is also a container. The codecs you are referring to are Vorbis and Opus.

Which one? The lab? Yes.
I also found footage of Ahti and while I wasn't in any real danger, it felt fun.
I didn't bother with the hidden cat statue side-quest or bringing that golden cube into an astral plane bathroom. The entire expansion felt padded and slow, especially with the reused cave formation corridors. I understand that it's probably difficult to mold realistic cave systems, but fuck me I got lost constantly because everything looked the fucking same.

I think I simply missed those streams but C&C is way more polished than what I am seeing of Dune and the story is fun too but I get it.

If you're not concerned about filesize then increase the bitrate at which you capture your footage.

That footage isn't mine, I'm taking whatever I find on youtube(that specifically doesn't say I can't reuse anyways) and clipping it for my own use. I'm guessing there is no way to improve what's there?
Another thing, I noticed that the site I use to download videos off youtube only goes up to 720p, even if there is 1080p or higher options. Are there any better ways to download the videos with better quality?

I made a post about it in the "Gameplay from UUUU" thread, basically I'm making a Western Games Chart with over 300+ games, and well, I don't have time to play that many games and get footage from them. The only way I'm going to be able to get that many clips is if I download longplay channel footage and cut it up into 2-15 minute videos for those interested in the games. People might be more inclined to try them there is more info on the game rather than just naming it: screenshots and a short description that sort of thing. Videoclips came to me as an idea once somebody else mentioned it, and it's not like those gay longplay videos with no commentary exist for any other purpose than for other people to use their footage anyways, I'm almost done, but feel free to contribute if you want, the list of games is in that thread
>>196816
I'm used to using y2mate, but I will see if jdownloader2 is any better. I'm seeing quite a few low quality videos I could improve on, so once I have footage for every single game, I will probably start picking and choosing which ones I can replace with better quality footage or even record my own if possible.

that sounds pretty asinine
I suggest you get a recording software, pick "Display Capture" and play the youtube video in fullscreen or (and this is what I would suggest if you're planning on making it less than 32 MBs,) use "Screen Capture"/"Region", crop it to the youtube playback area and record whichever segment you want there.
