What's the point of using models in the first place when a token or marker will do just fine? It seems like a lot of money for not much tangible reward.

Looks nicer, duh. Plus it's easier to recognize when you'd potentially need hundreds of unique tokens to classify models. There's also the aspect of designing the miniature to be your own rather than using a pre-designed one or just some boring chip/token.
