why do people eat spicy foods? It seems very masochistic to me. It burns your mouth. It ever gives you a stomachache the day after or burns your ass when taking a shit.
endorphins released from the pain
I enjoy the taste and it masks other flavors that I don't like.

Has this ever actually happened to someone or is it just one of those weird pop-culture memes?

I ate spicy many times and it never happened once to me, I never understood the meme about your asshole burning when you shit either

I have heard that smokers are compelled to consume spicy foods in large quantities because their taste buds are too scorched to get any other flavor.

They most likely ate too much, that's why it happened to them.

Tobacco and eye-wateringly spicy food both come from the same continent.

It all makes sense now.

What brand do you smoke.

Yes it does happen, but it completely depends on the type of spicy. I think most spicy foods are broken down in the gut so by the time you take a shit, it doesn't burn. However, I have some spicy meatsticks (Landjager) that make my ass burn without fail. I can eat plenty of other spicy foods without issue, though.

Hot countries eat spicy food because the spices kill germs. It lets them eat low quality, partially rotten food in relative safety.

They don't eat it for the taste. They think it tastes good because they evolved to tolerate it. Or in other words, the ones who disliked the taste of spices were removed from the gene pool by disease.

Oscar Mayer, extra spicy
I eat spicy food because it gets my pipes flowing when I need them to. The actual spicy taste is surprisingly addictive, though.

Do you have a source for that, or are you just repeating thing's that you've heard without knowing if they are true or not?

The adrenaline and punch but also the flavor. There's some hot sauce that tastes really good.

Mask the flavour of spoilt/stale/improperly-prepared food

>first worlders
1. Cultural cringe
2. To prove how “tough” they are
3. Grew up eating unspiced stale/improperly prepared food and think all unspiced food tastes that way
Fewer tastebuds on the tongue leads people to want to eat hot spicy stuff. That's why certain subspecies prefer the heat, it is in their genes to have less taste.

What does thinking for himself have to do with anything?
If he has any evidence for for spices letting people eat low quality, partially rotten food in relative safety, he'll post it himself.
